Shawano girls track and field team wins Early Bird Invitational

Kietlinski leads Gresham/Bowler in Wausau

The Shawano Community High School girls track and field team got its spring season underway with a dominant showing at the Wausau West Early Bird Invitational on March 16 in Wausau.

Shawano scored 157 points to take first place. Newman Catholic was the next closest team, with just 90 points.

Gresham/Bowler also participated at the invitational, with the girls team scoring one point. Emmitt Kietlinski turned in a few strong finishes to help the Gresham/Bowler boys score 32 points and place fifth.

The Shawano girls earned four first-place finishes on the night, with Lily Guenther earning two on her own.

Guenther won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 47.49 seconds. She posted a time of 5:57.88 to win the 1,600.

Natalie Bystol won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet. She also placed second in the 55 dash (7.97 seconds) and was third in the high jump (4-10).

Adalyn Barkley had the other top finish, winning the 400 in 1:07.57. She claimed third in the 800 in 2:53.23.

Bailey Hendricks and Onna Hermann earned a pair of second-place finishes for the Hawks.

Hendricks followed Guenther to the finish line in the 800 (2:49.5) and 1,600 (6:07.94).

Hermann was second in the pole vault (8-6) and triple jump (31-1¾). She also took sixth in the 200 (31.59) and ninth in the long jump (14-6).

Shawano’s 4x400 relay claimed second in 4:50.53, while the 4x800 team was third in 11:21.5. The team’s 4x160 relay finished fifth in 1:30.76.

Bailey Defere led the team’s throwers with a third-place finish in the shot put (28-10). Tela Hopfensperger was third in the 200 hurdles (35.44), fifth in the 200 (31.34) and seventh in the 55 hurdles (11.53).

Macey Nelson also earned three top 10-finishes. She was fourth in the triple jump (30-5¼), fifth in the long jump (14-10¾) and ninth in the 55 dash (8.36).

Maci Beyer finished fourth in the 400 (1:10), while Madisyn Weinig was fourth in the shot put (28-5).

Maddie Krueger came in fifth in the shot put (28-2¾). Anabelle Schroeder claimed seventh in the 1,600 (6:51.55).

Lauren Harkey grabbed eighth in the 800 (3:08.12) and Ali Lemerond was eighth in the 55 hurdles (11.67). Teagan Powers took ninth in the 800 (3:08.62).

Kietlinski placed either first or second in all three of his events at the invitational.

The senior won the triple jump with a top leap of 42-1½. He was second in the high jump (6-0) and long jump (20-3½).

Bryson Nelson earned two top-10 finishes for the co-op. He was sixth in the 1,600 (5:27.9) and ninth in the 800 (2:40.18).

The boys 4x160 relay finished eighth in 1:25.41.

Emily Jensen earned the lone top-10 finish for the Gresham/Bowler girls, claiming ninth in the shot put (26-1¼).
