Onna Hermann took first place at 120 pounds and several other Shawano wrestlers finished in the top five at the NEC/Bay Conference conference tournament on Feb. 3.

All told, Shawano sacred 93 points while giving up 86, which placed them in first at the event in Waupaca.

“The girls had a good day of wrestling, earning enough team points to take first,” coach Mike Homan said. “Onna Herman wrestled very well on the way to pinning all of her opponents and taking first place. She was our leading points scorer today. She has been working on more offense, and the change has really helped her score more points.”

Earning second-place finishes were Jenna Moede at 114 and Caitlyn Moede at 126. Third-place finishes were recorded by Courtney Schenk at 152 and Lily Tomas at 235. Adalyn Barkley placed fourth at 138, as did Maddie Moesch at 120. Lauren Harkey finished in fifth place at 120.

Breleigh Thornock took sixth place at 126 pounds.

“Caitlyn had a nice tournament today and ran into some tough competition in her finals match. All of her other victories today were falls,” Homan said. “She also scored a lot of team points. Maddie Moesch and Lauren Harkey both did a great job also in the 120 bracket. I really like how both of them keep competing and never give up. They wrestled some tough matches today were very competitive.”

Homan also had positive words about Schenk and Tomas.

“They both showed good improvement over the last few weeks,” he said. “I can see them getting better in every match that they wrestle.”

The sectional tournament in Kimberly is another week away.
