An undetermined number of students were disciplined Sept. 15 after a fight in a restroom at Shawano Community Middle School.

According to a letter from Superintendent Kurt Krizan sent out to parents, school administrators were informed of the altercation at about 9:20 a.m. between two students. An additional 11 students witnessed the altercation, but instead of trying to stop the fight, they were encouraging it to continue.

The students involved were disciplined, with the most severe punishment being a five-day out-of-school suspension, according to Krizan, “in accordance with our updated district discipline procedures and protocols.”

In his letter, Krizan urged parents to remain calm.

“Please remind your students that they are safe, and that their safety is a priority,” Krizan wrote. “We all have a voice to keep our schools safe. At a time like this, the best thing to do was to tell a nearby adult so that adults could quickly respond, which is what happened in this case.”
