A Shawano police officer is on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting that killed a man Nov. 19.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved death in the City of Shawano that occurred on Nov. 19 at approximately 5 p.m.

Officers responded at about 5 p.m. to a home in the 900 block of Lafayette Street for a reported disturbance, according to a press release from Police Chief Bradley Rabideau. Officers were let into the home and directed to the basement, where officers observed someone with their hands in the air and another person holding a shotgun. An officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual with the gun. Rabideau said in the release that officers attempted lifesaving measures before the individual was transported to the hospital, where they died.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident, according to Rabideau.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin Crime Lab, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Shawano County Coroner’s Office. All involved law enforcement officers are fully cooperating with the investigation, according to Rabideau.
