Morgan Musings: New sign updates fire conditions

Greetings, Morgan! I hope you are finding ways to enjoy summer, even as many of us are staying quite a bit closer to home than usual.

If you have traveled north on County Road C from “downtown” Morgan lately, you may have noticed a new sign in front of the Green Valley-Morgan Fire Department’s building along the east side of County Road C. The sign is a classic Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources “Smokey the Bear” sign that alerts passersby of the level of fire danger on a daily basis.

Josh Herman, a Green Valley-Morgan Fire Department member, introduced the idea of the department putting up a Smokey the Bear sign. After about a year of planning and securing a DNR grant, the sign was constructed in March by Herman and fellow firefighter Matt Gaulke. The sign is updated daily based on DNR information. This is especially important during fire season, which typically starts in the middle of March and lasts for about six weeks.

Fire fundraiser

Due to ever-changing health and safety concerns and advisories, the Green Valley-Morgan Fire Department has decided against having its summer fundraiser picnic that traditionally has been held in August. Even though the picnic is not happening this year, the fire department still has equipment to update and maintain.

All Morgan landowners should have recently received a letter from the fire department regarding the option of contributing to the department’s fundraising efforts. Please consider being generous toward this pledge campaign, since more traditional forms of fundraising may not be feasible anytime soon.

For information, feel free to contact Leonard Wahl at 920-373-3308 or Shawn Wagner at 715-853-7540. Next year’s picnic date has already been set for Aug. 14, 2021.

Anniversary

Did you know that I’ve been writing this column for five years? The first column I wrote was about the Oconto County Breakfast on the Farm when it was at Golden Corners Dairy back in 2015. Time sure flies! Take care, Morgan!
