Lena, Bonduel golf teams punch tickets to sectionals
UPDATED: May 27, 2 p.m.
The Lena and Bonduel boys golf teams placed in the top four at the Division 3 Bonduel Regional on May 23 to advance on to sectionals.
Lena posted a team score of 332 to win the regional, which was held at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil. Bonduel placed second with a mark of 344.
Roncalli (348) and Mishicot (369) were the other two teams that advanced on to sectionals. Gillett also competed at the regional, taking seventh with a score of 419.
Lena's Drake Dionne tied for the top individual score at the regional with a 78.
“The main thing to doing well in anything in life is to just have fun, and I took that out onto the course with me. And I just started swinging great, and the ball dropped,” said Dionne. “I’d have to give it up to my assistant coach Kenny (Leuer) though; he walked with me a good portion of the round and just kept me in a great mood the whole day and kept things really fun.”
Braden McVane and Mason Belongia each carded 83s for the Wildcats.
Mason Spice posted a round of 88, while Evan VanderZanden tallied a 95 to fill out Lena's team.
“It means a lot to win regionals, not only to me but to our whole team,” said Dionne. “We have worked our butts off night after night, and I think I can speak for the others and say it doesn’t stop here. We are coming into sectionals and looking to go win. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many more wins to come.”
Bonduel was paced by Jake Dreyer's round of 81. Jaxon Bogacz tallied an 84, while Colin Margelofsky posted a round of 88.
Colin Fischer and Reed Luepke each posted 91s to round out Bonduel's five-golfer team.
“I see getting second as a team as a great place to start in the postseason,” said Dreyer. “We fought through and shot our season low with room for improvement.
“We still have a lot of work to do to make it to state, but our team sees it as a certain possibility to make it. We will be working extra hard as a team this whole week to hopefully show our best stuff at sectionals. We certainly have some hefty competition ahead of us, but I know we are plenty good as a team to compete.”
Lena and Bonduel will next golf at the Crivitz Sectional on May 30 at Hunter’s Glen Golf Club in Crivitz. Golfers open play at 9 a.m.
Gillett's Aydin Franti narrowly missed an individual spot at sectionals after tallying a round of 100.
Elsa Limberg (105), Tyler Frank (106), Katelyn Sturm (108) and Laney DeBauch (115) also golfed for Gillett.
