College Highlights (May 21)

UW-Madison

Shawano Community High School graduate Brandi Gueths helped the Wisconsin women’s varsity eight rowing team to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Rowing Championships on May 16 in Indianapolis.

The varsity eight team earned a time of 6 minutes, 40.34 seconds, with Michigan (6:25.744) taking first.

Gueths, who serves as the varsity eight’s fifth seat, was also named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Viterbo

Gillett graduate Lauren Herzog earned a second-place finish as an individual while representing the Viterbo University women’s track and field team at the North Star Athletic Association Outdoor Championships that took place May 13-14.

Herzog posted a time of 12:58.23 in the 3,000 steeplechase, which was about over 50 seconds better than her seed time. The finish earned her team eight points.

St. Norbert College

Emily Gonnering, an Oconto Falls graduate and current athlete for the St. Norbert College women’s track and field team, competed in the hammer throw at the Midwest Conference Championship that ran May 14-15.

Gonnering had a top throw of 31.01 meters to place 10th.

Winona State

Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate Maddy Pietz helped the Winona State University women’s 4x400 relay team to a first-place finish at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship, which took place May 13-15. Pietz and the 4x400 relay team took first in 3:46.19 to earn 10 points for the team.

The Witt-Birn grad was also on the second-place finishing 4x100 relay team, which posted a time of 46.21.

As an individual, Pietz qualified for the 200 dash finals, where she posted a mark of 24.68 to claim sixth place. She took 10th in the 100 dash (12.21).

UW-Eau Claire

Oconto Falls grad Autumn Canavera and Suring grad Mitch Stegeman each competed in an event for the UW-Eau Claire track and field team during the UW-La Crosse Eagle Open on May 14.

Canavera placed sixth in the women’s 1,500-meter run, posting a time of 5:04.14.

Stegeman claimed second in the men’s pole vault after clearing 5.01 meters.
