College Highlights (April 15)

St. Norbert College

Oconto Falls High School graduate Mason Sefcik and Wittenberg-Birnamwood graduate Simon Stewart pitched for the St. Norbert baseball team during a strong week on the diamond. St. Norbert posted a 5-1 mark.

Sefcik earned the win in a 7-3 victory over Dominican on April 9. He surrendered eight hits, two walks and two runs while striking out three batters.

Stewart got two outs during a 5-3 loss to Concordia Chicago on April 4. He allowed one run after hitting two batters.

Lena graduate Kennedy Marquardt and Oconto Falls graduate Emily Gonnering each represented the St. Norbert women’s track and field at the Beloit Open on April 9.

Marquardt was on the first-place finishing 4x400-meter relay that posted a time of 3 minutes, 58.71 seconds. Individually, Marquardt took 13th in the 200 (27.78).

Gonnering took part in four individual events, with her top finish coming in the javelin after a throw of 25.04 meters put her in 10th. She claimed 13th in the discus (31.42 meters), 15th in the hammer throw (31.9 meters) and 17th in the shot put (9.11 meters).

UW-Stevens Point

Menominee Indian grad Guadalupe Corn competed in a trio of events for the UW-Stevens Point women’s track and field team during the Rex Foster Twilight on April 10.

Corn placed 10th in the hammer throw (36.86 meters), 12th in the shot put (10.8 meters) and 13th in discus (34.97 meters).

Winona State University

Witt-Birn graduate Maddy Pietz had another strong day of action for the Winona State women’s track and field team during the Ashton May Invitational on April 10.

Pietz placed second in the 200 dash with a time of 24.78. She was on the 4x100 relay team that placed first in 47.91.

MSU-Moorhead

Gillett grad Derek Hanson placed eighth in the 1,500 while running for the Minnesota State University-Moorhead men’s track and field team at the Al Bortke Open on April 9.

Hanson finished the race in 4:18.43.

UW-Platteville

Pulaski graduate Kayla Lipsey had a busy day while competing in four events for the UW-Platteville women’s track and field team at the Ashton May Invitational on April 10.

Lipsey placed 16th in the 100 hurdles (16.78), 24th in the javelin throw (20.77 meters), 30th in the 200 dash (27.46) and 34th in the long jump (4.44 meters).

UW-La Crosse

Oconto Falls grad Tucker Bouche pitched a total of five innings for the UW-La Crosse baseball team during games against UW-Stevens Point last weekend.

On April 9, Bouche worked 3⅓ innings, surrendering four walks and a hit but no runs. He struck out a pair of batters.

The following day, Bouche worked 1⅔ innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He tallied three strikeouts.

UW-Madison

Shawano graduate Brandi Gueths was a part of two varsity eight races for the UW-Madison women’s rowing team during the Syracuse Invitational on April 9.

In the morning, Wisconsin’s varsity eight team placed third in 6:42.635. Gueths and the team rowed to a second-place finish in 6:55.375 in the afternoon session.

UW-Whitewater

Bonduel grad Jessie LaBerge tied for 46th place while representing the UW-Whitewater women’s golf team at the Firebird Spring Invitational on April 9 and 10.

Her two-day score of 197 — 100 on day one, and 97 on day two — helped her to the top individual score.

UW-Eau Claire

Suring graduate Mitch Stegeman competed in three events for the UW-Eau Claire men’s track and field team during the Ashton May Invitational on April 10.

Stegeman placed ninth in the 110 hurdles (15.72), 11th in the pole vault (4.35 meters) and 25th in the discus (37.03 meters).

Concordia University

Bonduel grad Derrick Folkman placed 27th in the 800 while representing the Concordia men’s track and field team at the Rex Foster Twilight on April 10.

Folkman finished the race in 2:29.71.

UW-River Falls

Shawano graduate Jewel Waupekenay helped the UW-River Falls softball team to a pair of wins over UW-Whitewater on April 9.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Waupekenay had two hits, including a run-scoring single. Waupekenay belted a two-run homer and also had a sacrifice hit in game two.

UW-Stout

Pulaski grad Kevin Ruechel continued his strong season for the UW-Stout men’s track and field team with a top finish in the shot put at the Ashton May Invitational on April 10.

Ruechel won the shot put with a top throw of 17.77 meters, a little under two meters better than any other competitor.

He also placed eighth in the discus (42.02).

Western Technical College

Pulaski graduate Chase Reinke played well to help the Western Technical College baseball team split a doubleheader with Hibbing Community College on April 9.

In a loss in game one, Reinke walked twice and scored a run. Reinke drove in a run and had a sacrifice during a win in game two.
