Oconto Falls thrower piling up strong finishes

Oconto Falls High School senior Tucker Moynihan is trying to enjoy every moment of his final high school sport season. He’s turned in several strong finishes this spring as a thrower for the track and field team.

Moynihan’s best day of action so far this season was at the Oconto County Track Meet on May 10 in Oconto Falls. He won the shot put with a top throw of 43 feet, 0.25 inches and was also first in discus with a throw of 118-11.

At the Peshtigo Quad on May 6, Moynihan was first in the shot put (43-1.5) and second in the discus (111-11). The senior came in first in the shot put (43-7.5) and eighth in the discus (107-4) at a North Eastern Conference quad May 4 in Oconto Falls.

Moynihan placed third in the shot put (40-4) and fifth in the discus (118-8) at another conference meet May 18 in Oconto Falls. He opened the season with a fifth-place finish in the shot put (40-0) and seventh-place finish in the discus (108-0) at the April 27 Marinette Quad.

Q: When did your interest in track and field begin?

A: I would have to say it started in sixth grade when I joined the middle school track team and just tried it out for the first time.

Q: What is your favorite part about the track and field season?

A: My favorite part of the season is being able to compete and hang out with all of my friends that are on the team.

Q: What are your individual goals for your senior season?

A: My biggest goal is to just have fun and improve as much as possible at each meet.

Q: Being a senior, and with this season going later into summer than usual, how do you plan to stay engaged and focused as the season winds down and postseason nears?

A: Just knowing that this is my last every high school season keeps me focused on trying my hardest.

Q: You are a thrower for your team. How did you prepare yourself for the track and field season?

A: In the offseason I spent a lot of time in the weight room trying to get stronger to increase my throwing distances.

Q: You’ve been able to rack up a number of top finishes already this season. To what would you attribute that success?

A: I would definitely say lifting in the offseason greatly helped, as well as staying focused at practice.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of competing on the Oconto Falls track and field team?

A: My favorite memory was when we helped shovel the track my freshman year after we got that huge blizzard in the middle of April.

Q: Do you have any rituals you go through before a meet starts?

A: I just try to stay relaxed, listen to music and have some pregame Skittles.

Q: Favorite TV show, movie, and musical artist?

A: TV show — “Breaking Bad.” Movie — “Star Wars.” Musical artist — George Strait.

Q: Name one thing about yourself that not many people know.

A: I’m a fully certified firefighter, as well as a licensed EMT.

Q: What’s the greatest piece of advice you have ever been told?

A: No matter what happens, just have fun.

Q: What are some things you hope to accomplish after graduating high school?

A: I hope to be successful in college to become a career firefighter/paramedic.
