Barricades are in place, and utility work is underway on a reconstruction project on a roughly one-mile stretch of Airport Road (County Road HHH).

Shawano County Highway Commissioner Grant Bystol said the project began Sept. 11 and will wrap up by Oct. 6, depending on weather conditions.

The project measures 0.88 miles from the intersection of Airport Road and East Green Bay Street north to Lake Drive (County Road H) in the area of the Mielke Arts Center.

“We’ll be widening the roadway, which is now 11 feet with a 2-foot shoulder, to 12 feet with a 5-foot shoulder,” Bystol said. “It will be similar to Highway H west to Highway 47.”

There will also be some pulverizing and resurfacing on County Road H west of County Road HHH (Airport Road).

Bystol said some utilities along the project path are also being relocated, with much of that work done in the first two weeks of the project.

County crews will perform all the work, which is budgeted to cost $525,000.

“At this time, we expect to come in at or under budget,” Bystol said.

The Airport Road and a repaving project on County Road A in Red River are the last two county road projects on tap for 2023. However, Bystol said there are still projects for several towns and the state that will keep crews busy until the middle of October, or whenever the cold weather brings an end to the road construction season.
