Be careful what you wish for in elections

To the editor:

I am completely unknown to probably about 99.9% of you. I am a 78-year-old white woman (about to be 79) who has written no books. Nor ever been interviewed by anyone.

I am ashamed to be an American. I am disgusted and embarrassed. I cannot believe that millions of you voted for a convicted felon, a convicted rapist, a misogynist, a racist, an anti-Semite and, oh, by the way, a liar and cheat. Obviously, you see something positive in him that I do not.

Internet phishing labels leading to censorship

To the editor:

On Oct. 11, Fortiguard released a major update. Since then, I have experienced several blocked links in my emails when using the library’s public wi-fi.

At casual glance, they appear to be legitimate blocking of shady sites, but these are sites I know and have been subscribing to for years, plus, I’ve recently gotten home internet, and these same sites are not getting blocked on my home connection.

Support education as nation gains nothing from ignorance

Horace Mann, “Father of Education,” believed that education should be available to all children, free of charge, and funded by the state. Now, in 2024, a goal of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025’s is to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, a vow Donald Trump has repeated over and over on the campaign trail.

To the editor:

America has been referred to as “the world’s greatest democracy.” In recent years, however, there has been an undermining in the confidence in American democracy.

Donald Trump didn’t invent the Republican tactic of using racial and religious bigotry to win elections. Half a century ago, Richard Nixon betrayed the party of Lincoln with his Southern strategy to win the votes of racist southern Democrats angered by their party’s support for civil rights and equal voting rights for all Americans.

Dissing America’s veterans disqualification for office

To the editor:

I am a 70-year-old U.S. Navy submarine veteran who proudly served during the Vietnam War. Normally, I stay away from politics because I’ve seen that too often it serves to divide people instead of bringing them together. While I am not a member of any political party, I have voted for a Republican president more times than Democrat, but something happened that changed my mind.

LETTER: Time to dump Trump’s Kool-Aid

To the editor:

“Don’t drink the Kool-Aid” is a commonly-used phrase warning against blindly following people and/or ideas that dangerously coax us astray from reality and our values. It has a very dark origin dating back to the fate of over 900 Americans at Jonestown in 1978.

In 2016, Donald Trump falsely and arrogantly proclaimed that “I alone can fix it” regarding any and all of America’s problems. His faithful followers have been drinking his flavor of Kool-Aid ever since.
