Preparing to host 5,000 hungry visitors

Curtis Kohls says he’s honored that Oconto County selected his family’s farm to host its 2023 Breakfast on the Farm on June 11.

As many as 5,000 visitors are expected to descend on the farm, 6214 Klaus Lake Road north of Gillett, where a breakfast of eggs with cheese and ham, sausage, pancakes and all the trimmings is being served from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Catholic Mass is planned at 7 a.m.

Rhubarb Fest entering its 15th year

The Shawano County Historical Society is hosting the 15th annual Rhubarb Festival on June 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heritage Park.

This family friendly event has been a staple of summer in Shawano and is essential to the continued longevity and success of the historical society.

“It’s our major fundraiser, and we have done very well,” said Kathy Braun, of the Shawano Historical Society. “Everything we make here stays in the county and goes mostly for operational costs, like paying the bills.”

Gauthier’s acting career traced back to CMN

Last month, Menominee actor Justin Gauthier came to the College of Menominee Nation S. Verna Fowler Library and esiqtawaw — the Menominee word for visited. I use the word esiqtawaw because Gauthier’s conversational presentation was an example of the fine art that previous generations simply referred to as “visiting.”

Last November, I wrote about deer hunting and how to cook venison. Happily, Jon got a buck, and we’ve been enjoying it for months. The next big event was the opening of fishing season on May 6. Time for him to bring home some walleye. He’s been fishing his entire life, and he’s very good at it. Weather and health issues postponed his annual trip until the third week of May. The fishing wasn’t that good, but he did bring home enough for a meal. Fresh caught walleye pike is a family favorite here at Otter Run.

10-year-old boy buys his own tractor

Caleb Bergner bought a tractor a few weeks ago.

He bought the antique 1948 Farmall Cub tractor to use on his family’s farm. He used his life savings to buy it. None of this would be too unusual in Wisconsin’s heartland, except that he is 10 years old and in fourth grade.

Caleb is the son of Jill and Jason Bergner, owners of Bergner Beef Family Farm in Pulaski.

It was at the beginning of May when he first saw and immediately decided to buy the tractor from a neighbor about four miles down the road.

We have a proper McDonald’s farm over here on Leopolis Road. All we’d need is a couple of chickens.

Wait. We did that already.

I’m not a chicken farmer. While it was a very good experience, I’ve found that raising meat chickens is worrisome.

Latest barn quilt honors Red River Riders

Shawano County’s 402nd barn quilt, on display on an 80-year-old shed at N6669 Cherry Road west of Shawano, recognizes the benefits the Red River Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding provide to people with disabilities.

The quilt was sponsored by Mary Lisa Carenza and the horse image on the quilt is in loving memory of a horse Mary Lisa owned and that was a beloved therapy horse at Red River Riders for four years. His name was Sweet Pete and that is the name that has been given to the quilt.
