There’s something about the blessing of women friendships. For support, bonding and a sounding-off board, along with encouragement and a promise of prayer, we women need each other. Men need each other, too, I suppose, but I’m not an expert in that alfalfa field. (Everything in my brain has a farm analogy.)

Celebrating 150 years of faith, worship

Ascension Lutheran Church of Navarino is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year.

The small congregation will commemorate its 150th anniversary this fall. The church has been on the same plot of land since 1879. The current church building was built at W6101 Navarino Road in 1977, just south of the Navarino Nature Center.

New clothing store offers ‘sassy’ selection

Each of the new stores in the revitalized Shawano downtown shopping district brings something new and unique to the area.

One of the newest women’s boutiques, Simply Sassy Clothing Co., is no exception. Owner Cari Kretschmann, of Shawano, has a directed vision for her store, which opened the first weekend in June.

“Sassy” is the nickname she got from her father, Bill Arneson, who lives in Cornell, where Kretschmann grew up. The store’s name, Simply Sassy, describes herself and her store.

‘Gems of Yesteryear’ back for another pageant run

The Menominee Pageant Players will be going back to their beginnings as they perform their latest pageant July 31 at the Woodland Bowl in Keshena, but with some surprises.

“Gems of Yesteryear,” originally produced in 1961 and chosen as the first revival production in 2016, will this year include a mixture of new recordings and restored audio from the College of Menominee Nation’s archives. Some of the scenes in the show written by James Frechette Sr. will be partially performed in Menominee, giving the audience a chance to hear how the language was spoken over 60 years ago.

Woodworking a family affair for Golies

Golie’s Woodworking is a true family business, involving Matt Golie; his wife, Terri Golie; and their three sons, Josiah, 12, Quinn, 9, and Micah, 5.

In fact, the most commonly-used word heard in the Golie household is “we.” According to Matt Golie, “we” means all of his choices and decisions involve the whole family. He said that their sons are brought up with a sense of responsibility and a joy of learning by being involved with woodworking projects.

Putz national champion in Skills USA event

A classic Midwestern story has arrived at the Mielke Arts Center and will be checking off all the boxes — tornadic activity, proving you can go home again, a country girl journeying to the big city and, most of all, an epic battle over shoes.

Box in the Wood Theatre Guild will perform “The Wizard of Oz” for the next two weekends, bringing to life a musical made familiar to all generations, whether it was a family tradition to watch on television on Thanksgiving night or owned on DVD or Blu-Ray to rewatch again and again on a random schedule.

Beadwork combines business with friendship

Using the centuries-old art of Native American beading, Jennifer Terrio and Colleen Rudesill have built both a thriving crafting business and a close friendship.

Their crafting partnership is called Best Budz Beads. They are great friends, and their friendship seems to have blossomed along with their love of beading.

Terrio, of Keshena, and Rudesill, of Gresham, both learned to bead in the same ways that have been passed down from generation to generation over thousands of years.

Terrio learned beading from a cousin, when she was about 12 years old.

Pet portraits showcase four-legged loved ones

Amy Jo Bergner, of Pulcifer, is a talented, self-taught portrait artist.

What sets her apart from other artists in the Shawano County area is that she has never met her subjects in person.

Bergner creates portraits of pets who have passed away, helping people to cope with the loss of the pets.

Owners provide photographs of their deceased pets for Bergner to copy. She uses colored charcoal pencils to craft realistic portraits of the animals.
