GUEST COLUMN: Final word should belong to the people

It’s a question that goes to the heart of the American experiment: Is this a republic or a democracy?

Founder Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote comes to mind. While exiting the Constitutional Convention, Franklin was asked by a citizen what sort of government had been created. He is reported to have replied, “A republic. If you can keep it.”

Guest Column: Local newspapers play key cost-saving role

There are many aspects to the value of a community having a local newspaper serving its community.

The financial health of these newspapers has been challenged in recent years with the loss of local retail advertising, the transition to digital news delivery, negative effects of recent newsprint tariffs, the announcement of huge newspaper postage increases (50%-plus) over the next five years, and the recent negative impact of COVID-19 on many community businesses which advertise in local papers.

Walls of Wittenberg hosts annual fall show that features the work of the late Richard Neevel. Daughter Elaine Diffor, Wittenberg, gathered his artwork from friends, relatives and her siblings to showcase the work of a self-taught artist who specialized in nature scenes.
