CWEC talks to fourth graders about electrical safety

During May, to help promote Electrical Safety Month, Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative (CWEC) once again provided electricity safety demonstrations to fourth-grade students at six elementary schools in the CWEC service area.

Elementary schools included those in Birnamwood, Bowler, Iola, Rosholt, Tigerton and Wittenberg.

Summer slide can be prevented with activities

While school might be wrapping up for the year, that doesn’t mean children should stop learning.

Without brain-stimulating activities, children’s math and reading skills can slide, putting them behind once school starts again in the fall. This is often referred to as the summer slide.

Erdman new grand knight for Knights of Columbus

June 11 was the passing of the gavel with the Knights of Columbus Bishop Fox Council 2836 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano.

Longtime Grand Knight Lee Bosdeck passed the gavel to Doug Erdman, who will take the reins for the next year. Erdman will lead the assistance of Stu Kohlin, deputy grand knight and also guide committees such as membership, programs, faith, family, community and life.

Blashes corner market on Beach Bowls

The frosty smoothie bowl trend that has been spreading across the country for the last few years has just arrived in Shawano with the opening of Sun Sorbet in the heart of the revitalized Main Street retail area.

Sun Sorbet, owned by Sarah and Brandon Blashe, of Pella, offers a menu of 10 Beach Bowls, their signature phrase used to describe menu items available in the eatery. Sun Sorbet offers its own spin on the acai bowl trend with light and refreshing offerings of a variety of sorbets and healthy toppings.

The shop replaced Tumbleweed, an apparel store.

Dwarf bearded irises smaller but still lovely

Throughout our area, the dainty beauty of dwarf bearded irises now adorn garden beds and borders. Of shorter stature than the tall bearded iris that come later in May and June, the dwarf bearded iris are a joy unto themselves.

For those who may not have the space for the mass of tall bearded iris, or those who are looking for iris varieties for the front of garden beds and borders and walkways, dwarf bearded iris are ideal.

‘Puki’ presents chaotic tale on space station

I chose “Puki Horpocket presents Roy, the Most Chaotic Mid-Life Crisis in Cosmic History” – Earth edition translated by Zachry Wheeler, out of sheer curiosity. It is a sci-fi fantasy beyond anything I’ve encountered.

The sometimes-funny work is an account of Roy’s life and involvement in what is referred to as “The Incident.” That won’t be explained until we learn much about Roy and the millions of the invisible workers who keep Space Station Durangoni running.

IPSI takes look at land-centered learning

According to Jennifer Gauthier, it’s all about the “ahkēw, the land.” The director of College of Menominee Nation’s Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) said: “That’s why we’re all here.”

The specific “here” claimed was the Indigenous Planning Summer Institute (IPSI), which was held on the CMN campus the first week of June.
