Genske’s dream comes true at The Daily Drip

Chloe Genske always said she would have her own business, but even she didn’t think it would happen at 18.

In July, she opened The Daily Drip Coffeehouse, formerly Beans and Books Espresso, at 215 N. Main St., Unit B.

“When I was younger, I always knew I would own some type of business,” she said. “I just didn’t know what that looked like. I planned to go to school for aesthetics, and then the opportunity of buying the coffee shop came up, which I always wanted to do, but I figured that would happen years down the road, not right now.”

Main Street Sweets brightens downtown Gillett

Main Street in Gillett has been a sweeter place to be this summer.

Pete Vorpahl opened Main Street Sweets at 127 E. Main St. in time for the community’s annual Independence Day parade. Its shelves and walls are lined with a wide variety of sugary treats — including local favorites like Twig’s soda and Door County Confectionery candies.

Here, too, are Jelly Belly jellybeans and sugary memories from parents’ childhoods, like Charlestown Chews, Chuckles, candy cigarettes and Bonamo’s Turkish Taffy.

Shopko Optical opens in Shawano

Shopko Optical opened a new location in Shawano as the company continues to expand its operation of more than 140 stores in 13 states.

The store is located at 1056 E. Green Bay St. It provides eye exams, contact lens fittings and other eye care services.

Shopko Optical is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mattoon veneer and plywood manufacturer closes doors

Forty-two employees at a Mattoon veneer and plywood manufacturer are without a job after the company gave a one-day notice of its closure.

Wisconsin Veneer and Plywood, 610 Railroad St., Mattoon, was closed effective Aug. 2.

Also shuttered that day were two other facilities owned and operated by Besse Forest Products Inc. Goodman Veneer & Lumber Company in Goodman employed 48 workers, and Birchwood Manufacturing in Rice Lake employed 46.

Oconto Legion Golf Club reimagined as Julie’s

A familiar Oconto gathering spot has been reborn with a new, somewhat familiar name.

Julie’s Supper Club opened March 20 in the former Oconto Legion Golf Club, 532 Jefferson St.

Owner Luis Morales said the opening week crowd was very receptive and somewhat nostalgic about the makeover he gave the restaurant, which was gentle enough to preserve the qualities that made the old golf club a welcome spot.

Teen’s tractor business a real moneymaker

Many high school seniors are trying to figure out how to pay for college, whether with the help of family, scholarships or even loans.

Sidney Sylvester, a senior at Lena High School, isn’t too worried about that, as he’s already got a plan to pay four years of tuition in the bag, and it’s all through making toy tractors.

Making the tractors has been a way of life all through high school for Sylvester, who received a 3-D resin printer as a gift when he was in seventh grade.

With her husband, children, sisters, mother and invited guests looking on, Alegra Fowler formally opened her new clinic, Sweetgrass Behavioral Health, on Dec. 2.

“This is something I’ve been dreaming about for some time,” Fowler told the group that packed into the small office suite at 102 E. Green Bay St. in Shawano. “Thank you to my family and you all for your support.”

A new store has opened in Shawano, that is sure to delight children and adults of all ages.

On June 10, Steph’s DIY Design Studio, 212 E. Green Bay St., Shawano, celebrated its grand opening ceremony, and it was truly a family affair. The store’s owner and namesake, Stephanie Bendtschneider, was surrounded by her husband, Mike, and children, Ava, Payten and Caprice, giving tours and showing just what the store has to offer its customers.

Baby shop opens in downtown Shawano

Anyone looking for baby gifts or clothing won’t have to travel beyond downtown Shawano after Thornberry Cottage Baby and Gift recently opened.

The business, located at 152 S. Main St., next to ‘Til the Cows Come Home, held a soft opening in mid-February but is now fully operational for the community. It is an extension of the business that now-Shawano residents opened in Howard four years ago.
