Waupoose found guilty of manslaughter

A Keshena man was found guilty Feb. 22 by federal jurors of voluntary manslaughter and two other charges related to causing the death of another Keshena man two years ago.

Duane A. Waupoose Jr., 28, was indicted in March 2022 for killing or causing injuries that resulted in the death of Cory Grignon on Feb. 1, 2021. Jurors also found Waupoose guilty of assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and use of a firearm in connection with a crime of violence.

WI Student Senate Program includes two WB students

Two local high school students were given a chance to experience Wisconsin government firsthand, thanks to the 2023 Wisconsin Student Senate Scholar Program.

Thirty-three Wisconsin high school juniors and seniors were selected to partake in the event, including Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Isabelle Cieslewicz and Logan Hanson. In January, February and March, 11 students each month will have an opportunity to make the trip to Madison and learn about the inner workings of state government.

• Donald E. Webster, 20, Bowler, was charged Feb. 13 with one count of bail jumping. Shawano-Menominee Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr. set a cash bond of $250 and scheduled a status conference for March 14.

• Christopher C. Lidbury, 44, Shawano, was charged Feb. 13 with one count of operating while intoxicated (fourth offense). Kussel set a cash bond of $1,000 and a signature bond of $1,000. He also scheduled a status conference for March 20.

Bowlers, chickens hit the ice for good cause

What started out as a benefit for a community park has turned into a fundraiser for a rural Oconto County volunteer fire department.

More than 100 people showed up Feb. 18 for the Riverview Fire Department’s annual bowling fundraiser. Instead of throwing a bowling ball down an alley to roll a strike or pick up a spare, however, bowlers flung frozen chickens down a converted outdoor ice skating rink split into six lanes.

The fundraiser is one of two for the department, according to assistant chief Rob Heyrman.

Oconto County Board considers satellite offices

The Oconto County Administration Committee has recommended committing $550,000 in federal funds to a joint project with the Town of Riverview that would establish a county satellite office for the northern third of the sprawling county.

During the committee’s Feb. 16 meeting, County Administrator Erik Pritzl that the project is “not about building a town hall for Riverview,” as characterized by supervisors who raised concerns about the project and convinced the County Board to send it back to committee.

Oconto Falls School Board urged to hire HR director

An Oconto Falls School Board member and a former employee are encouraging the board to consider hiring a human resources director to address lingering questions about the corporate culture in the school district.

Chad Earley, who briefly stepped away from his role as board member to address the board during the “citizen participation” portion of the Feb. 13 meeting, said “a lot” of school district staff members feel they can’t make complaints to the administration “because they figure they’re going to have a target on their back.”

City of Oconto Falls to study hiring engineer

The city of Oconto Falls is looking to clean up its process for planning street projects.

During the city council’s monthly meeting Feb. 14, City Administrator Peter Wills floated the idea of hiring a city engineer or at least having an engineering firm on retainer to deal with street reconstruction and other projects that come up.

Video of the Oconto Falls School Board going back more than two years is being posted to the school district’s YouTube channel.

The board voted Feb. 13 to have its technology department seek out and repost meetings prior to August 2022, when the board voted to have the recordings posted on a routine basis.

Oconto Falls schedules middle school annexation hearing

The Oconto Falls City Council has scheduled a hearing for 6:30 p.m. March 14 on the petition to annex land for a new middle school that is currently located in the Town of Stiles.

A $37.6 million referendum was approved Nov. 8, with almost all of the funding earmarked for the middle school project to replace aging Washington Middle School. The goal is to open the new facility in fall 2025.
