TOWN OF UNDERHILL — It’ll happen something like this:

Just before noon today at the Underhill Community Center, Jan Scheibe will stand up and greet the folks who have gathered for lunch, maybe with a joke like the one she told last Wednesday.

It seems archaeological teams in New York and Los Angeles were arguing over which city had the first telephone system, after each dug down 10-20 feet and found ancient copper cables.

New bus driver is a familiar face

WITTENBERG — The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board approved the hire of Gene Lettau as a full-time bus driver at the July meeting.

Last year, route nine was divided and added to two other routes due to not having enough full-time drivers. Lettau will now drive that northern route.

According to Paul Yaeger, WBSD transportation director, another full-time driver would allow them to reunite route three as well. There are 12 routes in all.

Cold coffee is not just for summer

I was drinking cold coffee before iced coffee was even cool.

Full disclosure here, I never mean to drink cold coffee. It just seems to work out that way.

When I worked at the Mall of America, the shop next door sold hot, fresh coffee. I like mine with cream — not to cool it off, but because I like the way it tastes.

All lanes should be clear for fair, DOT says

All lanes of traffic on East Green Bay Street between Main Street and Airport Road should be open during the upcoming Shawano County Fair, according to the contractor in charge of the state Highway 22 reconstruction project for the Department of Transportation.

In his weekly progress report on the project, Kevin Lohff of JT Engineering, Inc. said all lanes were anticipated to be open from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. on Sept. 3.

The county fair starts Wednesday and runs through Sept. 2.

Pella Fire Department treasurer accused of embezzlement

SHAWANO — Felony charges were filed Thursday against the Pella Fire Department’s treasurer, who is accused of embezzling more than $20,000 of the department’s funds for his own use.

Lyle L. Krueger, 45, of Marion, is facing felony counts of theft in a business setting and misconduct in office.

He has also been charged with a felony count of possession of methamphetamine after authorities executing a search warrant at his residence Saturday found drugs and drug paraphernalia, according to the criminal complaint.

City reviews capital projects for next year’s budget

SHAWANO — City officials Wednesday had their first glimpse at a preliminary capital improvement budget for 2020, with an eye on deciding which proposed projects would make it to the final draft or be put off for another year.

It was the first of a series of joint-Common Council/finance committee budget discussions expected to continue into October.

Officials haven’t yet begun looking at the operational budget for next year. At this point there is no proposed levy or tax rate projection.

Shawano landfill reopened after beam replaced

SHAWANO — The Shawano landfill was open for business again Tuesday, two weeks after a hauler damaged a structural beam supporting the garbage and recycling transfer station.

The facility was deemed unsafe for operation after the Aug. 6 accident.

City staff had expected the repairs to take at least five weeks, but things moved along faster than expected after Chuck Felts of Felts Construction in Shawano reached out to his contacts with Boldt Construction in Madison.

Oconto Falls Dog Park is a hit

The opening of the Oconto Falls Dog Park was everything Emily Gonnering said it could be over the past 15 months.

Gonnering cut the ribbon and several dozen dogs and their owners checked out the facilities Saturday, Aug. 19, in a green space along North Maple Avenue where, decades ago, wood pulp was piled high awaiting processing at the mill nearby.
