Carmen Duran shows acrylic paintings at WOWSPACE

WITTENBERG — Art is a hobby for Carmen Duran, though you would find that hard to believe with all that she has accomplished. Her work has been purchased and hung in permanent collections in the Stevens Point Cancer Center and in the Eau Claire Cancer Center meditation room.

Dealing mostly in bright floral paintings in acrylic and mixed media, they seem to be a good fit for those in the healing process, according to Duran.

Second man dies of injuries from town of Grant explosion

A second man has died as a result of injuries sustained in an explosion and fire in the town of Grant that took place Sept. 23.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Monday that Michael Suehring, 64, of Shawano, passed away on Friday.

Steve Verg, 62, died on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as a result of the explosion and fire at his home at N4011 Verg Road. The address is the location of V & S Builders, Tigerton, which Verg started in the mid-1990s.

Shawano man facing felony drug charges

SHAWANO — A Shawano man is facing multiple felony drug charges, including the delivery or distribution of methamphetamine near a school, after his arrest in the city Thursday.

Anthony R. Warrington, 31, was taken into custody after authorities executed a search warrant at his residence in the 1300 block of South Union Street, across from Olga Brener Intermediate School.

Authorities received a tip from a confidential informant in August that Warrington was selling methamphetamine, according to the criminal complaint.

Police logged 16 incidents, including the following:

Disorderly — Police responded to a disorderly conduct complaint in the 900 block of South Washington Street.

Juvenile — Police responded to a juvenile problem in the 600 block of West Richmond Street.

OWI — A 38-year-old man was arrested for operating while intoxicated at Main and Randall streets.

Disturbance — A 31-year-old Shawano man was arrested for domestic violence-related disorderly conduct at Maple Lane Health Care, N4231 State Highway 22.

Trial in 1976 murders probable next summer

MARINETTE — It will probably be almost a year after the arrest of a Lakewood man, charged with two 1976 murders in Marinette County, before his trial can be scheduled.

The slow course of justice provoked an outcry from a family member and a stern rebuke from the judge Friday.

Raymand L. Vannieuwenhoven, 82, was arrested March 14. Authorities said a test of his DNA matched evidence found on the body of Ellen Matheys, who was sexually assaulted and killed at the McClintock Park campground in July 1976. Her boyfriend, David Schuldes, was also shot and killed.

Volunteers pull buoys from channel

Local volunteers and Shawano Area Waterways Management members continue the seasonal tradition of removing buoys from the local waterways. Preparing to launch are, from left, Todd Dobberstein, Kort Knope, Shane Behnke and Rugby Bosman. Not pictured is Pat Trinko. Volunteers place over 125 buoys in the spring for safety reasons. The buoys remain on the waterways throughout the spring and summer for boating season. The tradition of placing the buoys began over 40 years ago and is continued today.

Shawano-Menominee district attorney’s office to get new assistant prosecutor

SHAWANO — The district attorney’s office for Shawano and Menominee counties will soon have some long-awaited and much-needed prosecutorial help, now that the state has approved the hiring of a third assistant district attorney.

Gov. Tony Evers last week announced nearly 65 new assistant district attorney (ADA) positions across the state, including one locally.

Miller appointed to fill vacant County Board seat

SHAWANO — Dan Miller has been appointed the new Shawano County supervisor for District 17, filling the seat left vacant by the passing of Bonnie Olson.

Olson died Aug. 21 after a battle with cancer. She had been on the County Board for nine years and four months.

District 17 includes Wards 1 and 2 of the town of Belle Plaine and Ward 1 of the town of Richmond.

Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann said Miller was one of five people who had expressed interest in filling Olson’s seat.

Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Collin J. Benner, 26, of Menasha, was charged Sept. 26 with a felony county of second or subsequent possession of marijuana and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He could face a maximum 3½ years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. Benner is due in court for an initial appearance on Oct. 21.
