Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Kathryn M. Coel, 25, of Tigerton, was charged Oct. 2 with felony counts of possession of methamphetamine and bail jumping. She could face a maximum possible penalty of 3½ years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of possession of methamphetamine and six years and a $10,000 fine if convicted of bail jumping. She was ordered held on a $1,000 cash bond set by Judge James Habeck and is scheduled for an adjourned initial appearance Oct. 21.

RIVERVIEW — A team of volunteers cleared more than 12½ miles of roads and trails during their first three days of a 10-day project in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, putting a bit of a dent into the daunting task still ahead as the forest recovers from a devastating July storm.

Hundreds of miles of roadway and trails were blocked, and campgrounds had to be closed for weeks, after a macroburst leveled huge swaths of forest in the north woods, part of a storm system that led to a federal disaster proclamation affecting 18 counties and two tribes.

GILLETT — The year was 1944. FDR was president, and World War II was raging.

A loaf of bread cost 10 cents, and a gallon of gas was 15. Locally, 1944 marked a turning point for the village of Gillett; this was the year Gillett incorporated as a city.

The city adopted a mayor/aldermanic form of government with three wards – a governmental structure still in effect today, 75 years later.

OCONTO FALLS — The life of St. Clare of Assisi mirrors that of her more well-known townsman, St. Francis, according to Chris Brabant, CEO of HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.

“They grew up in a privileged family; they had their lives set for them,” Brabant said. “They came from noble families, wealthy families, and St. Clare like St. Francis felt she had more to give to the world. She gave up all of her wealth and the ‘good life’ to follow the teachings of St. Francis to serve people, especially the poor and underprivileged and the sick.”

Paul J. Baugnet, 41, Oconto Falls, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was bound over on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia to manufacture, compound, convert, produce or store methamphetamine, and maintaining drug trafficking place, in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred April 5. Arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 17.

Marion man who strangled deputy gets six years in prison

SHAWANO — A Marion man convicted of strangling a sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to six years in prison Wednesday in a Shawano County courtroom packed with his family and friends on one side and a standing-room only crowd of law enforcement on the other.

Chad R. Kohel, 46, was convicted after a jury trial in June of felony counts of strangulation and suffocation and battery to a law enforcement officer. The jury acquitted him of attempted homicide and criminal escape.

‘Cooking Mom’ coming to Lena Taste of Fall

LENA — The fourth annual Taste of Fall is set for Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. at locations all around downtown Lena.

One of the main events will be Amy Hanten, TV personality and author of “The Cooking Mom” books, who will be doing a demonstration using fall foods. She will have a book available for purchase.

The North Country Kickers dancers will be stepping out and performing their new demo. There will be an amateur barbecue cook-off hosted by the Wooden Shoe, plus other food competitions. Anyone interested in competing should contact the Wooden Shoe.

‘Fall Into Art’ show at the WOWSPACE

WITTENBERG — Walls of Wittenberg has once again timed its “Fall Into Art” show to coincide with the Miles of Art festival.

“Miles of Art is an exciting time for us at the WOWSPACE, as many of the artists will be on site to talk with visitors — sharing their experiences, stories and expertise,” said Elaine Diffor, WOW’s event coordinator.

Six artists, three from Shawano County, will have their art on display and for sale at the WOWSPACE, 114 Vinal St.

High school principal accepts new position with DPI

WITTENBERG — Continuous improvement is a theme that has always been a part of Principal Jill Sharp’s career in education.

It is a theme that will she will be taking with her as she leaves her position at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School and begins work as the assistant director of the Wisconsin Response to Intervention program Monday Oct. 7.

During the past eight years at WBHS, Sharp has been working toward better training for teachers and meeting the needs of each student.
