Picture a small child on the floor of your kitchen — arms flailing, feet pounding, cheeks crimson. It’s the telltale sign of a child in the middle of a tantrum.

Teachers don’t usually see this extreme reaction to frustration at school, but sometimes a child reacts to a new task with great emotion. One of the most common frustrations for a kindergartner is learning so many things for the first time. The words “I can’t” are a regular mantra in the daily life of a 5-year-old.

Gillett mayor steps down in residency dispute

GILLETT — James Beaton says the Gillett City Council was unwilling to work with him after his life was thrown into upheaval, and as a result he felt he had to resign as mayor Thursday night during a closed meeting at City Hall.

Questions immediately arose about the legality of the process that resulted in Beaton’s removal.

“They don’t want me there,” Beaton said Friday regarding the six aldermen. “I could have dug my heels in, but how would that help anybody?”

Woman who handed out drug-laced cookies sentenced

SHAWANO — A Shawano woman accused of handing out marijuana-laced cookies during the St. Patrick’s Day festivities in the town of Wescott was sentenced Thursday on two felony counts.

Cathleen K. Krause, 58, pleaded no contest to charges of manufacture and delivery of marijuana and second or subsequent possession of marijuana.

She was sentenced to 80 days in jail with work release privileges.

Clintonville cancels homecoming after stunt mocking Native Americans

CLINTONVILLE — Homecoming was abruptly canceled at Clintonville High School on Friday after a video showing student mocking a Native American drum circle during a lunchtime activity the previous day went viral on social media.

The 45-second clip, posted numerous times on various Facebook sites, showed four male students dancing around in a circle as a recording of Native American drumbeats played in the background during a lunchtime activity on Thursday.

Bonduel High School gets sizable donation of tools

BONDUEL — Students in the technology education program at Bonduel High School will have a shorter wait time to use tools for their work after a donation from Milwaukee Tools.

“They’re all power tools from skill saws to grinders, drills. The wide variety of tools Milwaukee Tools makes, they sent us,” said Travis Schindel, who teaches middle school and high school technology and engineering.

CLINTONVILLE — A group of high school students from Germany is about to wrap up a two-week stay with its sister school, Clintonville High School, carrying on a tradition that started 30 years ago.

“It initially started off as a class project where students wrote letters to Germany wanting to know if anybody would want to set up a sister school program, and they got a connection,” said Steve Emslander, a social studies teacher at CHS that has coordinated the program for the last 20 years.

4X4 new equation for MIHS students

SHAWANO — Ten Menominee Indian High School students aren’t waiting for graduation to get a jump start on their college education.

All seniors, the students are part of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s 4X4 program. In the 4X4 program, students take four NWTC classes, one at a time, for four weeks. They take basic classes like English composition and sociology on an accelerated basis to not only get their core college courses out of the way, but also to save money they would have spent on their first year of higher education.

Porter’s Patch ready for pumpkins

BONDUEL — The pumpkins weren’t plentiful, but the orange around Porter’s Patch was evident Saturday as Farmtoberfest kicked off its eighth year.

Farmtoberfest was originally going to start Sept. 14, but heavy storms dropped 7 inches of rain just prior to opening day — leaving the farm just saturated enough for owner Troy Porter to push the date back a week and give the weather a chance to calm down.

City to take ownership of downtown SIST building Nov. 1

SHAWANO — The city’s acquisition of two blighted downtown properties from the Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology should be finalized by the first of next month now that the city’s legal counsel has sorted through the problem of multiple third-party debtors that were complicating the sale.

The Shawano Redevelopment Authority reached an agreement with SIST in April to purchase the buildings at 214-216 S. Main St. for $36,000, a price considered fair market value.

Shawano looking at room tax hike

SHAWANO — City officials are contemplating an increase in the hotel and motel room tax aimed at generating more revenue to finance community events, particularly the Thursday night events at Franklin Park that were inaugurated this year.

Letters went out this week to hotel and motel operators informing them that the city was considering the idea, though it won’t be taken up by the Common Council until next month’s meeting.

City staff is recommending that room taxes be increased from the current 4.5% to 6% starting the first of the year.
