Nelson faces murder charges in Diemel case

KINGSTON, MO. — Garland “Joey” Nelson could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Nick and Justin Diemel, both of the Bonduel area. The charges resulted from an investigation started July 22 when the two brothers disappeared after last being seen at Nelson’s farm in Braymer, Missouri.

Oconto Falls School Board sets tentative tax rate

OCONTO FALLS — The Oconto Falls School Board plans to complete work on its 2019-20 academic year budget at a brief meeting Oct. 30.

The board gave tentative approval to a tax rate of $10.52 per $1,000 of equalized valuation at its Oct. 14 meeting, pending the state Department of Public Instruction release of the amount of general state aid each school district will receive for the coming year.

Oconto Falls Women’s Club disbands

After much consideration and regret, members of the Oconto Falls Women’s Club determined at its Sept. 23 meeting that it was time to disband after 115 years of service to the community, due to declining membership.

Merline family celebrates sesquicentennial in Oconto County

OCONTO — The Merline family recently celebrated a 150-year reunion in Oconto on Aug. 10, hosted by Jay and Sharie Merline and their family at Oconto City Park.

A potluck meal was held with dinner prayer by the Rev. John Bergstadt, a Merline family descendant. Merline photo albums were also shared. Balloon creations and face painting was provided for the kids by Jay and Sharie Merline. Door prizes were also given by families.

NEW Concert Band to perform Fall Concert

MARINETTE — The fall concert presented by the Northeastern Wisconsin Concert Band is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Jones Auditorium at Marinette High School, 2135 Pierce Ave.

This is the first concert of the band’s 27th season, and the concert will be under the direction of Robert Berndt and Glen Reinke.

Slight drop in Oconto Falls enrollment

OCONTO FALLS — There were 47 fewer students in Oconto Falls public schools on the third Friday in September than in 2018, administrators told the School Board on Oct. 14.

State school aids are based on enrollment, which is determined by a “snapshot” count every year on the third Friday in September.

Superintendent Dean Hess said he anticipates another slight drop next year because of a somewhat larger senior class at the high school.

OCONTO FALLS: The track laying crew of the Chicago & Northwestern has been at work this week and has the track laid from the spur alongside River Street to the crossing at Manufacturers Street. It is expected that the bridge builders will be here in a few days when the work of building the bridge across the pond will be commenced and pushed rapidly ahead, so that trains will be crossing the river before the freeze-up.

Accident damages bridge in Bonduel

The bridge for the Mountain Bay Trail crossing over state Highway 117 at the northern border of Bonduel was damaged Monday due to an accident, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. No details on the accident itself were provided, but the bridge is damaged enough to prompt the county to block off travel under the bridge. The county is officially detouring traffic onto County Road BE and County Road E. No timeline has been given on when the bridge will be repaired. (Lee Pulaski | NEW Media)

Oconto Falls School Board approves student trip to Spain in 2021

OCONTO FALLS — Advanced Spanish students at Oconto Falls High School will have an opportunity to travel to Spain during the 2020-21 school year, after the School Board approved the department’s request Oct. 14.

Teachers Hannah Zidon and Susan Ziolkowski-Stiede presented a report on a trip earlier this year when 31 students from the Oconto Falls Spanish III and IV students to Madrid and Barcelona with excursions to two nearby towns.

WBSD board approves remaining bids
