Goodfellows ready to give again

CLINTONVILLE — With the holiday season fast approaching, the Goodfellows, a local charitable group from Clintonville and Marion, is busy preparing for their 69th year of distributing food, toys and other items to needy individuals and families in the area.

“Last year, we helped 693 people, including 115 families and individuals,” said Steve Conrad, president.

With the distribution now including the residents in both the Clintonville and Marion school districts, the efforts to serve the less fortunate residing in those areas continues to grow.

School board to vote on budget Monday

SHAWANO — The Shawano School Board will vote Monday on the Shawano School District’s 2019-20 budget, which is structured to lower taxes and get ahead on its debt repayment.

The district’s balanced budget, just shy of $30 million, will reduce the tax rate by 11 cents to $9.58 per $1,000 of equalized valuation. Someone with property worth $100,000 would pay $958 in school district taxes.

Clintonville math teacher wins nation’s highest honor

CLINTONVILLE — A Clintonville High School math teacher was presented with the nation’s highest teaching award last week in Washington, D.C.

Kevin Reese was one of four Wisconsin teachers awarded a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Pulaski students raise pheasants

PULASKI — Pulaski High School agriculture students have latitude for wide-ranging semester projects depending on their interests.

Raising fish such as perch or trout for sale, planting and maintaining a school forest, helping raise plants in the PHS greenhouse, maintaining a tropical fish tank and others involving raising farm animals are examples.

Friends, family honor shooting victim

CLINTONVILLE — The funeral for 59-year-old Kevin “Hollywood” Hein, a Clintonville native, was held Oct. 19 at Christus Lutheran Church.

It was moved from the Christ Congregational Church because of the anticipated large crowd.

Local author, photographer release eighth nature book

CLINTONVILLE — A local children’s author and photographer pair have released another book in their series of read-aloud children’s nature books.

“Wake Up! It’s a Great Day!” is the eighth and possibly final installment by Cherry Shauger and her friend, Vicki Kielpinski.

Shauger is the one who creates the story lines for the books, which are intended to get kids excited about nature.

County tax levy will rise due to new debt

SHAWANO — Shawano County supervisors Wednesday approved a 2020 budget that will raise property owner tax bills by an additional 30 cents per $1,000 of equalized value.

The county budget calls for a levy of $17.3 million, up from $15.8 million in 2019.

That translates to a tax rate of $5.38 per $1,000 of equalized value, a 9.4% increase over this year’s $5.08 cents per $1,000.

3rd man dies of injuries from town of Grant explosion

CAROLINE — An explosion and fire in the town of Grant last month has claimed a third life while the cause of the blast remains under investigation.

Daniel D. Young, 62, of Marion, passed away Oct. 17 at UW-Hospital in Madison.

Steve Verg, 62, died Sept. 25 as a result of the explosion and fire at his home at N4011 Verg Road. The address is the location of V & S Builders, Tigerton, which Verg started in the mid-1990s.

A second man, Michael Suehring, 64, of Shawano, died Sept. 27 as a result of his injuries.

Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Bret J. Dodge, Sr., 28, of Keshena, was charged Oct. 23 with two felony counts of bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. He could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted. He was ordered held on a $1,000 cash bond set by Judge William Kussel Jr., and is scheduled for an adjourned initial court appearance Nov. 13.

Franklin St. closed for gas leak investigation

Firefighters had ventilated the house as a precaution. The firefighters and police responded to a WE Energies contractor cutting a gas line in the 100 block south of West Green Bay Street about 10:22 a.m., according to Dan Mauel, Shawano police chief. Mauel added that residents in the block were asked to evacuate for safety reasons and the street was closed.
