Police logged 21 incidents, including the following:

Disorderly — Police responded to a disorderly conduct complaint in the 100 block of South Washington Street.

Disturbance — A 30-year-old Shawano man was arrested for domestic violence-related disorderly conduct and strangulation in the 800 block of South Park Street.

Drug Offense — Possible marijuana was reported found in one of the rooms at Birch Hill Care Center, 1475 Birch Hill Lane.

Breaking ground for the new ag building at WBHS

WITTENBERG — About 50 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 18 celebrating the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District’s second and more expansive phase of improvements, approved in November’s referendum.

On hand for the ceremony, held on the east side of the high school, were several school board members, representatives from Hoffman Planning, Design and Construction, Inc., students and community members.

Q: Where did you go to school?
A: I went to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for ag education. My goal was to be an ag teacher.

Four injured in explosion, fire in Town of Grant

Four people were injured on Monday in an explosion at about 4 p.m. in the town of Grant. Numerous fire department and emergency services personnel and three medical helicopters were dispatched to N4011 Verg Road in the Town of Grant just west of Caroline after reports of an explosion and fire. Eagle III, Spirit, and Theda Star were at the scene. A fourth victim was taken by helicopter from ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano, according to a Shawano County Sheriff’s Department deputy at the scene. The address is the location of V & S Builders, Tigerton.

Assessed property values rise in Shawano

SHAWANO — Residential property values in the city are up an average of 13.5 percent this year over last year, according a recently completed citywide property revaluation.

Commercial property values are up by an average 3.8 percent.

The figures are still preliminary and pending the open book process, where property owners can question or contest the results, and a meeting of the Board of Review that will certify those numbers.

However, city officials don’t expect the total property values to change much.

Shawano woman charged in boosters club theft

SHAWANO — A Shawano woman was charged Thursday with stealing more than $6,000 from the Shawano Community High School Music Boosters while serving as treasurer for the organization.

Aleta C. Young, 47, is facing a felony count of theft in a business setting for allegedly taking money from the boosters organization between October 2016 and March 2019.

She could face a maximum six years in prison and $10,000 fine if convicted.

High-speed chase ends in Shawano County

BOWLER — Two people were arrested after a high-speed chase Tuesday that began in Marathon County ended with the car catching fire on County Road D in Bowler, according to authorities.

The vehicle was pulled over in the town of Norrie just over the Marathon County line and a Shawano County sheriff’s deputy was called to assist.

The vehicle fled, leading Marathon and Shawano County deputies on a high-speed pursuit into Shawano County where, according to Chief Deputy George Lenzner, “the car basically started on fire on its own account.”

Recent proceedings in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court:

• Joshua M. Lapp, 34, of Clintonville, was sentenced by Judge James Habeck Sept. 18 to five years in prison and five years extended supervision on a felony count of using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime. He is also required to register as a sex offender and receive sex offender treatment. Lapp was arrested after a sex sting operation in December 2017 conducted by the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department in which sheriff’s detectives posted ads on the internet posing as a 15-year-old girl.

Show cow now state’s big star

CECIL — There are cows as far as the eye can see in Wisconsin, but there’s only one Cow of the Year, and that cow is right here in Shawano County.

Milk-n-More Tequila Naomi, a 7-year-old Jersey cow bred and owned by Milk-n-More Farms, will be recognized for the honor on Oct. 2 as part of the World Dairy Expo in Madison. The award will be presented by Abigail Martin, the 72nd Alice in Dairyland, and Brad Pfaff, Secretary for Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Wittenberg water rates could go up 60%

MADISON — An Oct. 10 public hearing on a request to double the cost of water for Wittenberg Municipal Water and Sewer Utility customers adds another event to the utility’s unusually active year.

In March, the water utility filed its first comprehensive rate case since 1995 on an order from the Public Service Commission. The utility had reported losses of $141,317 during the two previous years and had little cash on hand, which triggered the PSC to require a utility to file a rate case.
