OCONTO FALLS: Union Manufacturing Company has undergone many changes to the interior to the building in preparation for making pulp board at the plant. Workers have installed a cooker to prep the wood before it goes into the grinder and a pulp machine has been installed to make pulp boards.

Rec center referendum could be last for Shawano School District for decades

A potential referendum for a joint recreation center between the city of Shawano and the Shawano School District is still months away, but the district appears confident that it would be the last referendum it would need to request for the next 20 years.

Jeff Easter, the district’s buildings and grounds director, said that one of the more common questions he has been asked during a series of community meetings is how much debt the district still has from two previous referenda.

From kindergarten dreams to a life of educating

Gary Cumberland planned to be a kindergarten teacher.

That never happened for the retiring Shawano School District superintendent, but he has been involved in public education in one form or fashion for more than 35 years. Now, Cumberland is saying farewell to life in the public school system as he takes the principal position with Sacred Heart Catholic School.

Cumberland’s passion for children can be traced back to when he was in high school. He said he enjoyed babysitting, and he particularly enjoyed caring for a boy who lived next to him who was deaf.

Police logged 29 incidents, including the following:

Intoxicated Person — Police responded to an intoxicated person complaint at Walmart, 1244 E. Green Bay St.

Disorderly — Police responded to a disorderly conduct complaint in the 200 block of West Lieg Avenue.

Warrant — A 48-year-old woman was arrested on a warrant in the 1000 block of East Green Bay Street.

Missing Wittenberg woman found, arrested in Milwaukee

A Wittenberg woman reported missing and possibly in danger by her family last week was found in Milwaukee on Saturday and arrested for a probation violation, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department

Tamara Hightower, 32, was last heard from via text messages in Milwaukee on July 30 before she was reported missing. The texts and the fact that other family and friends had not been able to reach her, led the family to believe she might be in danger.

Redevelopment Authority finalizes housing plans

SHAWANO — The city of Shawano is now open for business for property owners looking for help in rehabilitating residential properties.

The Shawano Redevelopment Authority has finalized a program offering a mix of grants and low-interest loans to property owners aimed at encouraging housing rehabilitation, particularly in the downtown.

“I’m very hopeful that people will take advantage of this,” City Administrator Eddie Sheppard said.

Charges filed in Wescott drug bust

Two people are facing numerous felony drug charges, including intent to deliver meth and maintaining a drug trafficking place, after authorities executed a search warrant last week in the town of Wescott.

Charges were filed Monday against Amber R. Schultz, 34, and Jeffrey P. Zeise, 37, both of rural Shawano.

According to the criminal complaint, authorities began an investigation in July that included controlled drug buys with a confidential informant who purchased methamphetamine from Zeise on three separate occasions.

Repairs at closed landfill moving faster than expected

SHAWANO — There is no time frame yet for reopening the Shawano landfill, which was closed last week after a hauler damaged a structural beam supporting the garbage and recycling transfer station.

Things are moving along a little faster than expected, according to City Administrator Eddie Sheppard.

Chuck Felts of Felts Construction in Shawano reached out to contacts with Boldt Construction in Madison and the two have been working together to come up with a plan, Sheppard said.

Accidents — Police responded to a two-vehicle injury accident at Green Bay and Waukechon streets. A property damage accident was reported in the 1200 block of East Green Bay Street.

Harassment — Harassment was reported in the 700 block of South Main Street.

Warrant — A 45-year-old woman was arrested on a warrant at the probation and parole offices, 1340 E. Green Bay St.
