Drug bust in Wescott nets 3 arrests

Authorities executed a search warrant on a residence Wednesday in the town of Wescott, seizing a load of methamphetamine and marijuana and arresting three people.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said the search warrant was the result of an ongoing drug investigation.

Over 27 grams of methamphetamine, 25 marijuana plants, and 216 grams of additional marijuana products were located during the search. A man and a woman from the Shawano area were taken into custody, along with a man from Oconto County.

Sexual assault

Two Shawano County Jail inmates have been charged with sexually assaulting another inmate at the jail on two separate occasions.

Deion J. Boivin, 26, of Keshena, and Robert G. Wallace, 29, of Shawano, are each facing a charge of first-degree sexual assault, which carries a maximum possible penalty of 60 years in prison, and fourth-degree assault, which carries a maximum nine months imprisonment and $10,000 fine.

Boivin is also charged with a felony count of assault by prisoners and Wallace is also charged with a misdemeanor count of battery.

Shawano Police Department

Aug. 7

Police logged 31 incidents, including the following:

Intoxicated Person — Police responded to a intoxicated person complaints at Third and Main streets and at The Store gas station, 404 E. Green Bay St.

Vandalism — Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B, reported graffiti to school walls and gym doors. An entrance sign along County Road B and four outside gym doors had the same type of messages as a previous incident at the middle school, according to police. Both incidents are under investigation.

ELAND — Summer time celebrations define life in Wisconsin and Eland celebrates a nod to the past on Saturday.

The festivities, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for family friendly Eland Day include food and retail vendors and access to all things railroad. Sponsored by the village of Eland and the Eland Historical Society this offers a chance to reconnect with the past.

SHAWANO — Wolf River Lutheran High School graduated 11 in May, one of its biggest, all of them set on specific career paths.

“All of our kids had a purpose, a destination to go to,” said Jerry Jiter, the school’s principal as well as the de facto counselor. “In interviewing all 11, as well as the juniors, once they said, ‘This is what I want to do,’ we tried to find a way to either connect them with college or go through a youth apprenticeship program.”

Shawano school board advised on better communication

SHAWANO — The Shawano School Board received some suggestions Monday night on how to improve transparency between the school district and the families who utilize its education services.

Shelby Kaveinga, a member of a group called Shawano School Stakeholders, said her group has been working on identifying strengths and weaknesses with school and district communication. The group distributed a survey that indicated taxpayers would like to be able to access video feeds of school board meetings.

New apartment complex in Clintonville opens its doors

CLINTONVILLE — A grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new East Village Estates, located at 120 16th St. near Industrial Avenue, was held Tuesday.

Anne Christensen, assistant vice president of Pre/mier Real Estate Management, said her company brings upscale apartments to communities like Clintonville.

Three of the four buildings have been completed and are already being occupied, according to Pre/mier regional property manager Heather Phillips. There will be a total of 48 two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments when completed.

The Drovers play Wittenberg’s Art Park

WITTENBERG — The crowd-favorite Drovers will once again be returning as part of the Walls of Wittenberg summer concert series on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

The park is right next to the WOWSPACE at 114 Vinal St., which is where the band will play if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The local favorite features five musicians and instruments that include drums, steel guitar, keyboards, trumpet and guitars. This band has been going for a couple generations now. The current band members are Gary Wyman, Conrad Groshek, Irv Kovalski, Dave Simonis and Rob Wyman.

Burglary charge dropped against Wittenberg village president

A felony burglary charge against Wittenberg Village President and Shawano County Supervisor William J. Switalla was dismissed Thursday and a misdemeanor count of theft will also be wiped off the books if Switalla abides by the conditions of a deferred prosecution agreement.

Switalla will have to perform 40 hours of community service over the next six months as part of that agreement.

After the hearing, Switalla said he already performs a lot of community service for the village and county, but will do additional work.

Milling and paving of Green Bay Street to begin next week

Following is the weekly update on the state Department of Transportation’s construction project along state Highway 22 in Shawano, provided by JT Engineering, Inc., the contractor on the project.

Work since last update:

• Contractors to continue work on reconstructing ADA compliant curb ramps on Green Bay Street.

• Railroad crossing reconstruction is underway, with installation of new track and new signals/gates.

Anticipated work schedule for week of Aug. 5:

• Continue work on the new box culvert at Murray Creek.
