The Drovers play Wittenberg’s Art Park

WITTENBERG — The crowd-favorite Drovers will once again be returning as part of the Walls of Wittenberg summer concert series on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.

The park is right next to the WOWSPACE at 114 Vinal St., which is where the band will play if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The local favorite features five musicians and instruments that include drums, steel guitar, keyboards, trumpet and guitars. This band has been going for a couple generations now. The current band members are Gary Wyman, Conrad Groshek, Irv Kovalski, Dave Simonis and Rob Wyman.

Burglary charge dropped against Wittenberg village president

A felony burglary charge against Wittenberg Village President and Shawano County Supervisor William J. Switalla was dismissed Thursday and a misdemeanor count of theft will also be wiped off the books if Switalla abides by the conditions of a deferred prosecution agreement.

Switalla will have to perform 40 hours of community service over the next six months as part of that agreement.

After the hearing, Switalla said he already performs a lot of community service for the village and county, but will do additional work.

Milling and paving of Green Bay Street to begin next week

Following is the weekly update on the state Department of Transportation’s construction project along state Highway 22 in Shawano, provided by JT Engineering, Inc., the contractor on the project.

Work since last update:

• Contractors to continue work on reconstructing ADA compliant curb ramps on Green Bay Street.

• Railroad crossing reconstruction is underway, with installation of new track and new signals/gates.

Anticipated work schedule for week of Aug. 5:

• Continue work on the new box culvert at Murray Creek.

Police logged 17 incidents, including the following:

Theft — A push lawn mower was reported stolen in the 200 block of South Union Street. A phone was reported stolen at the Shawano Recreation Center, 220 E. Division St.

Assault — A sexual assault complaint was under investigation.

Trespass — Trespassing was reported in the 800 block of Park Street.

Mascot debate resurfaces in Shawano

SHAWANO — The Shawano School District made the decision 27 years ago to part ways with its Native American mascot, the Indian, in favor of becoming the Shawano Hawks.

However, 31 of the state’s 423 school districts still have Native American mascots, regarded by many as racist, and the local district has been approached by the Wausau School District to become a co-sponsor on a resolution for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards asking for the state to ban such mascots from its halls of education.

Shawano spends another National Night Out

SHAWANO — National Night Out returned to Shawano on Tuesday, as the police department hosted its second annual event at Memorial Park.

National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, which introduced the program in 1984, when 400 communities in 23 states took part.

It has since grown nationwide, and this was the second time the Shawano Police Department sponsored the event locally.

Officer Michelle Kamba, who organized the event last year, took on those duties again this year.

Dinah helps the healing begin

WITTENBERG — Who can be there for you when you don’t have the words to express your emotions?

Dinah, the therapy dog at Homme Youth and Family Programs, Wittenberg, can provide a service not many humans can offer in times of trouble and that is unconditional love.

A 45-pound golden retriever, Dinah meets with the boys three days a week and even participates in group sessions. She can provide a sense of understanding and acceptance which many of the residents have never felt in their young lives.

Shawano traffic woes to continue

Drivers are advised to find alternatives as roadwork on the section of East Green Bay Street from Main Street to Waukechon Street is expected to last until the Monday before the Shawano County Fair, Scott Kroening, Shawano city director of public works, said.

Kroening suggested the newly re-opened Fifth Street as well as Lieg, Richmond and Elizabeth Streets as East-West alternatives during construction. Using Waukechon Street or Lincoln Street provide North-South choices.
