Jury costs may be charged to party at fault

Once jurors show up at the Shawano County Courthouse to perform their civic duty, they get paid regardless of whether the trial goes forward or is settled 30 minutes before it is set to begin.

Now, Shawano County officials are asking judges to exercise their right and assign those jury costs to the party at fault — often as much as $1,000 a day.

Ethan Schmidt, clerk of courts, said there were three cases in August that were settled at the last minute.

WRDC breaks ground on new building

The Wolf River Development Company could have its own headquarters within a year, and on Sept. 30, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin broke ground for the 20,000-square-foot, three-story building that will provide for the tribe’s economic future.

Currently, the company offices are spread all across the Keshena area, according to CEO Crystal Chapman-Chevalier, so the new building will allow the company to operate in one location. The building will include an economic incubator area, meeting spaces and a drive-thru coffee shop once completed.

Monthly milk production per cow down in Wisconsin in August

Milk production in Wisconsin during August totaled 2.67 billion pounds, down 2% from the previous August, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service Milk Production report.

The average number of milk cows during August, at 1.27 million head, was 2,000 below the previous month and down 3,000 from August 2023. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,110 pounds, down 45 pounds from last August.

Milk production in the 24 major states during August totaled 18.1 billion pounds, up 0.1% from August 2023.

• Lindsay R. Holstrom, 28, Shawano, pleaded no contest Sept. 24 to battery by prisoners, 13 counts of felony bail jumping, misdemeanor battery to an unborn child, retail theft, theft of movable property, resisting or obstructing an officer, bail jumping and three counts of disorderly conduct. Judge Katherine Sloma imposed and stayed a prison sentence and placed her on four years of probation with conditions and costs.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports that about 1.2 million Wisconsin adults have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime – that’s about one out of three adult women and almost one out of every five adult men.

Aspirus Langlade Hospital in Antigo recently became the eighth Aspirus Hospital offering direct local access to a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program in its emergency department.

Fight sepsis with early detection and action

Every year, sepsis silently strikes down at least 1.7 million adults in the United States, a number that continues to rise.

As the population ages, antibiotic resistance grows and more individuals manage chronic diseases, the threat of sepsis looms larger than ever.

“Sepsis results from an infection that the body struggles to combat,” said Dr. Chad Radke, an emergency physician at Aspirus Health. “The immune response can become overwhelming, causing injury to the body itself.”

Shawano Area Writers plan to meet at night

The Shawano Area Writers (SAW) decided that, to reach out to more people who have the desire to write, an additional monthly meeting should be made available to the public.

Normally, SAW has held its monthly meetings from 10 a.m. to noon every third Thursday at the Shawano County Library. but members feel that there are many people out there who are working during those hours and cannot attend daytime meetings.

Starting Oct. 17, SAW will meet from 5:30-7 p.m. at Shawano’s Café, W7389 River Bend Road, Shawano.

Improvements enhance Lookout Tower experience

One of the most spectacular views of fall colors in northern Oconto County is from the top of the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower.

Built during the winter of 1934-35, the 100-foot-high structure was part of a 19-tower network that watched over the Nicolet National Forest in the days before aerial surveillance to detect forest fires.

“It’s one of the last towers of its kind still standing anywhere,” said Jayme Sellen, executive director of the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region (TEDCOR).
