Man sentenced in fatal 2012 crash gets an additional year in county jail

A man involved in a fatal crash a decade ago is spending another year in county jail after the Department of Corrections revoked what remained of his probation.

A teenage girl died and two friends riding in the back seat were seriously hurt when Brandon Bosacki lost control of the car and crashed on Oak Orchard Road in Pensaukee in June 2012.

New Oconto Falls middle school details begin to take shape

The Oconto Falls School Board got a sneak peek March 13 at the secure entrance improvements planned this summer at the district’s two elementary schools and the high school.

The improvements were approved in November at the same time voters OK’d building a new middle school to replace aging Washington Middle School.

Russ Schumacher of Nexus Solutions and Superintendent Dean Hess walked the board through floor plans for the improvements, which involve making visitors report to the main office to be vetted before being allowed into the building.

• Benjamin J. Stevens, 34, Bowler, was charged March 6 with one count of possession of narcotic drugs, one count of possession of THC, with intent (less than or equal to 200 grams) and one misdemeanor count of operating while revoked. Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge Katherine Sloma set a signature bond of $2,000 and scheduled a resumed initial appearance for April 5.

Jazz program hits right note for SCHS

Shawano Community High School’s jazz program was on full display at the annual Shazz festival over the weekend, but the bands have been showing elsewhere why they’re among the best high school bands around.

Christopher Kent, band director, said the signs were there when the bands performed at the Purdue Jazz Festival on Jan. 21. Having won the festival on a regular basis before COVID-19, the Jazz I band did not win anything last year, but this year, the students clawed their way back to third place.

Schmidt hears more on rural issues in district

State Rep. Peter Schmidt held his second set of listening sessions March 13, coming to Tigerton and Gresham after a morning in Black Creek to get the people’s pulse on what they want him to push for in the Wisconsin Legislature.

Wintry weather again impacted the audience size, in Schmidt’s view, but those who did come out made it clear that help for rural communities should be a priority for the freshman legislator. In Tigerton, there was a push from former Shawano County supervisor Ray Faehling to make sure funding is available for emergency services like fire and ambulance.

Martin provides insight on medical marijuana

As the state of Wisconsin continues the discussions into legalizing medical marijuana, one local resident shared his thoughts on why it should be legalized.

Roy Martin, Gresham native and Indigenous Ideas LLC Certified Cannabis Specialist, said that he is in favor of legalizing medical marijuana because it is a substitute for opiates.
