AARP seeks volunteers for tax prep work

Tax filing season may be months away, but AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites in cities across Wisconsin are already seeking volunteers who want to serve their community by becoming tax preparers for the program.

Tax-Aide focuses on serving older adults with low to moderate income and helps them secure tax refunds, according to Tax-Aide Prospective Volunteer Specialist Richard Blackburn. Volunteers provide free tax preparation and filing services to taxpayers, as well as other services.

DMV still available to provide voter identification

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding citizens to check and be sure that they have the proper identification needed to vote in the Nov. 5 election.

Stockbridge-Munsee swear in new council members

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans swore in the recently elected members of the tribal council Oct. 21, with several of them vowing to do a better job of listening to the people and working on catering to their needs.

William Miller took his spot as the tribe’s vice president after winning in the Oct. 12 tribal election, getting 254 votes to defeat Jolene Bowman, who received 157 votes.

Neopit man arrested for assault, burglary

A Neopit man who allegedly foot stomped the head and neck of a woman he was living with was indicted Oct. 23 in federal court with two counts of assault and one count of burglary.

Court documents alleged that Nee Gee J. Cloud, 31, rendered the woman unconscious by stomping on her head and neck, punching her repeatedly on the head, kicking her torso and slamming her head onto the floor. The woman was hospitalized for a month for the Sept. 20 incident to treat her lacerations and facial fractures.

Behnke, Hinze make pitches for Assembly seat

The 6th Assembly District will have new representation in January, and voters will decide between a Republican representative seeking a third term in office and a Democrat seeking her first state office.

Elijah Behnke, 41, lives on the east side of Abrams in Oconto County, but is currently looking at homes in the Pulaski area, which is in the district. Behnke is a small business owner who operates Echelon Professional Cleaning and is also a hobby farmer. He has a two-year degree in biblical studies from Toccoa Falls College.

Gretzinger to speak at Veterans Day ceremony

The Allied Vets Council will hold a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Shawano County Courthouse, 311 N. Main St.

The ceremony will begin with the sounding of the bells and fire whistle.

Veteran Dennis Bohm will greet those who gather, and the Rev. Edward Looney of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church will offer the invocation.

Kathy Rupp, a member of the U.S. Army from 1974-79 and provost marshal of AMVETS Post 10, will lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Patty Ainsworth singing the National Anthem.

Kwik Trip employees foil robbery attempt

Shawano Kwik Trip employees detained a woman taking money out of the cash register at the convenience store in the early morning hours of Oct. 23.

According to a statement from Capt. Shane Stange of the Shawano Police Department, the incident happened at at 2:28 a.m. at the store at 1241 E. Green Bay St.

The woman was wearing a disguise and was handcuffed by Shawano County sheriff’s deputies who were the first to arrive on the scene. Shawano police arrived shortly thereafter and investigated the robbery.

Trick or Treat Trail winds through West Side woods

The woods near West Side Beach in Oconto Falls are guaranteed to be packed with ghosts, goblins and goodies on Oct. 26.

The second annual Trick or Treat Trail is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon along the trail next to West Side Beach, located at the end of North Flatley Avenue.

“Community support this year was absolutely fantastic,” said Chrisine Grzelak, who has led, organized and managed the whole event since its inception a year ago.

Kids have an opportunity to dress up in their Halloween costumes and walk from station to station gathering sweets and playing games.

Williams honored for service to agriculture

Cows have been Amanda Williams’ passion since childhood, so it’s only natural they are part of her career path.

Today, she works in the feed section of the ag industry as an independent dairy nutritionist with a group of 15 other consultants. She has been with the group for three years, traveling to farms throughout northeastern Wisconsin.
