Gillett approves alternate graduation plan

The Gillett School Board approved an alternative graduation program during its March 16 meeting.

The program will offer different paths for graduation, including work and community service for those students who may be struggling in their regular classes.

“Looking at the purpose, it is really to provide that alternate path for graduation,” said Gillett Middle/High School Principal Shawn Limberg. “In some cases, the way that we do school does not work for some students.”

Historical wedding dresses on display in April

In an effort to raise funds for a replica train depot, members of the Greater Mattoon Area Historical Society are organizing a wedding gala fundraiser.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 29 at Chet and Emil’s, 388 Main St., Birnamwood. The gala will feature many wedding dresses from all the way back to the 1800s until recent times.

“We are displaying wedding dresses from the late-1800s time period,” said event organizer Gail Marten. “We have a dress from 1921, we have them from 1934 — all the way past 2000.”

Superintendent: Bomb scare was a swatting call

Gillett interim Superintendent Wayne Johnson updated the school board on the March 8 bomb scare at Gillett Elementary School, saying that it was a swatting incident, during its March 16 meeting.

Swatting is the action of making a call to emergency services to bring a large number of law enforcement or emergency service employees to an area. Swatting is sometimes done as a prank.

“This is something that is happening across the country,” said Johnson.

Report: Shawano school staffing levels inadequate

Cuts to staff, especially at the administrative levels, have resulted in Shawano’s public schools that are in crisis, according to a report conducted by CESA 5.

The Shawano School District asked CESA 5 to conduct a review of administrative staffing levels, which included support staff in the offices, to examine how Shawano looks when compared with other schools of similar size, including Waupaca. CESA 5 interviewed almost 30 people — administrators and their staff — to ascertain the district’s situation in caring for and educating children.

Virtual learning returns to school board

The Shawano School Board approved utilizing virtual learning days for grades 6-12 if there should be any more days the schools have to close due to weather on March 20, two weeks after the option presented left some board members less than enthusiastic about the proposal.

• Juan Juarez-Correa, 60, Green Bay, was charged March 13 with one count of operating while intoxicated (fifth or sixth offense). Shawano-Menominee Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr. set a cash bond of $2,000 and a signature bond of $5,000. He also scheduled a status conference for May 9.
