Witt-Birn, Pulaski wrestling teams fall in team sectional semifinals

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Pulaski wrestling teams each lost in sectional semifinal duals on Feb. 14.

Witt-Birn fell 58-18 to Shiocton in a Division 3 dual in Suring. Pulaski lost 38-27 to Wisconsin Rapids in Schofield.

The Chargers won four weight classes against Shiocton.

David Gauderman and Easton Davis earned forfeit wins at 220 and 120 pounds, respectively. George Seegmiller won a 4-2 decision at 285 pounds, while Devin Wudtke won by a 15-2 major decision at 126 pounds.

47 individual boys wrestlers qualify for sectionals

Forty-seven area high school wrestlers earned big wins to place in the top four at regionals on Feb. 11 and earn spots at sectionals.

Pulaski and Wittenberg-Birnamwood placed second as teams at their regionals to qualify for team sectionals.

Division 1

Pulaski and Shawano each competed at the Green Bay West Regional in Green Bay.

Thirteen Pulaski wrestlers placed in the top four to advance as individuals. The team earned 248½ points to finish behind only Bay Port’s 275½ points.

New-look wrestling postseason ahead as girls join mix

The postseason has arrived for high school wrestlers.

After girls wrestling held its inaugural state tournament in 2022 at the La Crosse Center, the girls will get to showcase their talents at state this winter at the Kohl Center alongside the boys. With the state tournament now including boys and girls wrestling, the postseason has a new look, and here’s a quick look at some of the proceedings.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team earned a second-place finish at the Central Wisconsin Conference Tournament on Feb. 4 in Shiocton.

The Chargers had three conference champions and three second-place finishers on their way to scoring 203 points, only behind Shiocton's 273½.

Bonduel had five first- or second-place finishers at the conference tournament and accumulated 174 points to grab third place. Menominee Indian scored 44 points to take eighth.

Xavier 13

Shawano topped Xavier in a Bay Conference dual on Feb. 2 in Appleton to claim the conference title for a fifth straight year.

Wahkeenyah Waukau (220), Brady Jones (285), Kody Popelka (132), Drake Herm (138) and Caden Young (170) all won by pin for Shawano. Alex Montour (126) picked up a 16-8 major decision win.

Dane Hodkiewicz (106), Dylan Gartner (113), Onna Hermann (120), Carsen Herm (152) and Drew Chelberg (160) all won by forfeit for Shawano.

Menominee Indian 56

Witt-Birn 54

Menominee Indian held off Wittenberg-Birnamwood in a Central Wisconsin Conference-East Division battle on Jan. 31 in Wittenberg. Menominee Indian led 39-16 at halftime.

Isaiah Moss scored 27 points to lead Menominee Indian. Dante Waupoose added 12 points.

Michael Miller hit three 3-pointers and led Witt-Birn with 14 points. Marshall Fraaza had 10 points, while Jett Rogowski had nine and Ian Salvesen eight.

Shawano, Bonduel girls wrestlers rack up 5 1st-place finishes

Area high school girls wrestlers put their talents on display and turned in positive results against some of the state’s best during the Shawano Round Robin on Jan. 27 in Shawano.

In an effort to get wrestlers three matches each, weight classes were limited to four wrestlers max and filled out by girls at the closest weights. That meant wrestlers went up against others that might not otherwise be at their weight class, creating some big-time matchups along the way.

Witt-Birn tops Bonduel in CWC wrestling dual

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School wrestling team picked up a 52-21 dual win over Central Wisconsin Conference foe Bonduel on Jan. 26 in Bonduel.

Bonduel later wrestled conference-leading Shiocton, falling 72-9.

The Witt-Birn vs. Bonduel dual began at 106 pounds, with Bonduel’s Kaitlyn Kroening earning a forfeit win.

Witt-Birn claimed the next three weight classes.

At 113 pounds, Witt-Birn’s Ben Miller earned a 10-1 major decision win over Jaxon Bogacz. Miller led 5-0 after one period, 8-0 after two and 10-0 in the third before Bogacz earned his point.

Tomahawk 53 (OT)

Tigerton edged Tomahawk in overtime of a nonconference clash on Jan. 26 in Tigerton.

Colby Wanta made 12 free throws and scored 20 points to lead Tigerton on the offensive end.

Ryder Graham recorded 10 points for the Tigers, while Maverick Maas had eight points and seven rebounds.

Loghan Wanta finished with seven boards for Tigerton. Asher Michaelis tallied seven points, six rebounds and three assists.

Menasha 28

Shawano knocked off Menasha in a battle of two undefeated Bay Conference teams on Jan. 24 in Menasha.

Connor Chelberg got Shawano started strong at 182 pounds with a pin in 3 minutes, 59 seconds. Mason Theis followed that up with a 4-2 decision win at 195 pounds.

After dropping three straight weight classes, Shawano's Dane Hodkiewicz earned a 13-3 major decision win at 113 pounds.
