Menominee Indian wins two duals

Menominee Indian picked up a pair of dual wins on Monday in Florence. The Eagles topped the Florence co-op 60-18 and Menominee (Mich.) 51-24.

Joe Komanekin (152) earned Menominee Indian’s lone non-forfeit win over the Florence co-op, winning by pin in 1:36. Tate Zhuckkohosee (138), Gregory Turney (145), Calvin Waukau (160), Scott Webster (170), Glen Miller (182), Hunter Connahvichnah (195), Asenex Turney (285), Chad Reiter-Wilber (120) and Joe Perez (132) all won by forfeit.

Shawano places second at invitational

Shawano had several wrestlers finish near the top of their weight classes to earn second place as a team at the Brillion Invitational on Saturday. Shawano earned 276 points, behind only Brillion's 366.

Noah Jones (138), Ben Carroll (152), Keith Tourtillott (220) and Nick Kohn (285) all placed first to lead Shawano.

Wrestling: Bonduel edges Shiocton in dual

BONDUEL — The Bonduel High School wrestling team expected a battle with rival Shiocton in town for a Central Wisconsin Conference dual.

The Bears took Shiocton’s best shot, but still were able to come away with a 36-27 win on Thursday.

“One thing we can always count on when wrestling Shiocton is they always bring their best. This is a huge rival and we were anticipating a good battle tonight,” said Bonduel coach Chris Rank.

Wrestling: Experienced core hopes to lead Oconto Falls to big season

OCONTO FALLS — Despite competing in the loaded North Eastern Conference, the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team believes it can put together a big season.

Oconto Falls, which will be coached by Dave Brasier, has several wrestlers back from last year’s team that went 9-6 in duals for the season and 5-3 in NEC duals.

Two of the returning wrestlers — senior Tyler Budz and sophomore Clayton Whiting — ended last season competing at state, with Whiting winning a Division 2 title as a freshman in the 152-pound weight class.

Bonduel goes 4-1 at Seymour Duals

Bonduel earned four dual wins while competing at the Seymour Duals on Saturday.

Bonduel opened the day with wins over Wausau East (54-24) and Waupun (43-30) before taking down Peshtigo (64-18). After the team’s only loss at the hands of Seymour (41-35), the Bears bounced back with a win over Mishicot (51-16).

Bonduel opened its season with a dual win on the road over Rosholt on Thursday.

Logan Majewski (138), Kaden Bergsbaken (170) and Isaac Banker (195) earned six points each for Bonduel after pinning their opponents.

Max Sokolski (145), Alex Garside (220) and Tyson Bogacz (120) all picked up forfeit wins for the Bears.

Wrestling: Loaded area teams eye big seasons on mat

SHAWANO — Area wrestling teams head into the season with stacked rosters and big aspirations.

With several impact wrestlers back from last season’s squad that won the Bay Conference, Shawano expects another big season.

Coach Mike Homan’s team will be headlined by seniors and juniors and filled out by incoming wrestlers.

Seniors Keith Tourtillott and Ben Carroll will lead the Hawks, while juniors Nick Kohn, Trace Yeager, Gage Timm, Colten Herm, Reef Anthony, Carter Schmidt and Wyatt Brandt help form a strong core.

Clayton Whiting continues to shine on wrestling mat

Oconto Falls’ Clayton Whiting continues to rack up accomplishments on the wrestling mat.

Following his Division 2 152-pound weight class state title as a freshman on the Oconto Falls High School team, Whiting has since turned in several other strong finishes at big tournaments around the country.

Just over a month after claiming his state title, Whiting made the trip down to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in the 16U Folkstyle Nationals from March 29-30.

Competing for Askren Wrestling Academy, Whiting won all five of his matches to claim the 160 weight class.

Charger camp preps wrestlers for season

WITTENBERG — The Charger Intensive Wrestling Camp gave area wrestlers a chance to work on their craft in preparation for the upcoming season.

The camp was run at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School and included 65 wrestlers between grades 3-12 from July 29-31. The number of wrestlers was the camp’s highest amount in its three-year history.
