BOYS WRESTLING: Shawano takes fourth at Holiday Classic

Shawano’s boys wrestling team earned a fourth-place finish at the Holiday Classic it hosted Dec. 16.

Drake Herm captured the championship at the 144-pound weight class.

“Drake is a hard worker, a great kid and an outstanding teammate,” coach Mike Homan said. “I really like the way he attacks people from the neutral position. His takedowns are something special, and he is always ready to go.”

Carsen Herm took second place.

Dylan Gartner wrestled well at 106 pounds and finished in fourth place.

GIRLS WRESTLING: Shawano Hawks handily win Holiday Classic

Shawano’s girls wrestlers were aggressive against multiple schools and captured first place at their own Holiday Classic on Dec. 16.

Jenna Moede wrestled well and took first place in her finals match with a fall in 3:52. Gwyn Hermann took second place after a close match in the finals.

“Gwyn continues to improve and wrestle hard,” coach Mike Homan said. “Jenna went 4-0 on the day with four pins. Jenna has really been wrestling well, and she continues to improve.”

Hawks sweep wrestling triangular

In what was expected to be a great night of triangular wrestling action Dec. 7, the Shawano Hawks traveled to Ashwaubenon to take on the Bonduel Bears and Ashwaubenon Jaguars. Coming away with one win would’ve been gratifying enough, but the Hawks wanted to do one better as they went 2-0 on the night picking up a 60-9 win over the Bears and winning 52-25 against the Jaguars.

“The team wrestled well tonight,” coach Mike Homan said. “I was proud of how each person on the team battled in each position. Nobody gave up, and they worked hard in each match.”

Bonduel comes up empty at Ashwaubenon wrestling triangular

Not to get lost in the shuffle of the weekend wrestling extravaganzas are the midweek tilts as the Bears hit the road to take on Shawano and Ashwaubenon on Dec. 7.

The wins were tough to come by as Bonduel dropped both matches on the night by scores of 60-9 to Shawano and 48-29 to Ashwaubenon. However, there were several strong performances across the board, especially against the Jaguars.

Hawks girl wrestlers win debut tournament

If the opening tournament for the Shawano girls wrestling team is anything like the Dec. 2 event in Kimberly, the 2023-24 season will be full of great matches to watch.

The Hawks scored 262 points en route to a first-place victory against more than two dozen other schools.

“The Hawks were led by strong performances by Gwyn Hermann at the 100-pound weight class and by Macey Nelson in the 138-pound weight class,” Shawano coach Mike Homan said. “Both girls wrestled great this weekend and pinned multiple wrestlers on their way to the finals matches.”

Pulaski doubles up Seymour in non-conference wrestling

Looking to kick things off with a bang, the Pulaski Red Raiders made the short drive to Seymour for a non-conference wrestling tilt with the Thunder on Nov. 30.

After sitting deadlocked 6-6 three matches in, all it took was two massive Pulaski runs that accounted for 31 of the teams 49 points. That would be more than enough for the Red Raiders in this one as they kicked off their season by doubling up the Thunder 49-24.

Bogacz to wrestle for UW-La Crosse

Bonduel’s Tyson Bogacz took the next step in his wrestling career when family and friends recognized him at a celebratory signing event May 10 inside Bonduel’s new gymnasium.

Bogacz will next wrestle for UW-La Crosse after a standout career at Bonduel.

“It’s really exciting that I finally made it to this stage in my life, and that coach (Dave) Malecek has blessed me with an opportunity to continue doing what I love,” said Bogacz.

3 area youth wrestlers place 1st at state

Area youth wrestlers turned in strong showings during the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle State Championships on March 24-25 in Madison.

Marissa Zeitler of Gillett/Suring and Brooke Huffman and Eli Komanekin of Wittenberg-Birnamwood led the area wrestlers at state with first-place finishes.

Several other area wrestlers also placed in the top six at state.

Zeitler took first in the girls born in 2012-13 85-pound weight class, going 4-0 on her way to a state title.

Comins, Rattin make M&O honorable mention wrestling team

Lena’s Dylan Comins and Suring/Gillett’s Keegan Rattin were both named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference honorable mention team in their senior seasons.

Comins capped his season competing at the state tournament in Madison. He placed fourth in the Division 3 120-pound weight class and had a 52-11 overall record.

Comins had just one dual match loss on the season, coming against Coleman, which placed 13 wrestlers on the all-conference first team.

Gauderman, Young named top boys wrestlers

Area boys wrestlers put together another strong season on the mats this winter.

A whopping 17 boys qualified for state, with Shawano’s Caden Young and Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s David Gauderman earning the top finishes. Young and Gauderman share the NEW Media Inc. Wrestler of the Year honor after their big seasons.

Gauderman placed second in the Division 3 285-pound weight class as a senior. He had an impressive 51-2 record.
