WRLHS gets grant to educate about opioids

Wolf River Lutheran High School is sounding the alarm about the opioid crisis and how, even in Shawano County, the drug problem has taken hold.

The school recently received a $5,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to educate students and the community about drugs in general with an emphasis on opioids. Principal Shellie Kosmerchock recently went through an eight-hour training session to learn the latest on opioids, signs that teens are using them and what parents and others can do if they sense someone is on opioids.

Area track and field sectional qualifiers

Area track and field teams started postseason action at regional meets on May 22, with many individuals and relay teams qualifying for sectionals.

Pulaski and Shawano competed in Division 1 regionals. Menominee Indian, Oconto Falls and Wittenberg-Birnamwood were at a Division 2 regional, while Bonduel, Gillett, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy, Suring, Wolf River Lutheran, Gresham/Bowler and Marion all competed in Division 3 regionals.

To advance to sectionals, individuals or relay teams had to place in the top four.

Bonduel boys win home track and field invitational

The Bonduel High School boys track and field team won the team’s home invitational after accumulating 145 points on May 18 in Bonduel.

Bonduel outlasted Manawa (134) for the top spot. Menominee Indian (70) claimed third, while Gresham/Bowler (60) was fourth. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (43) and Wolf River Lutheran (20) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the girls side of things, Manawa took first with 153 points. Bonduel (108) took second, while Menominee Indian (104) was third. Witt-Birn (79) and Gresham/Bowler (43) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Shawano girls win home track and field invitational

The Shawano Community High School girls track and field team dominated the competition and took first at the Ryan Jozwiak Memorial Invitational on May 9 in Shawano.

The Shawano girls accumulated 196 points to finish first. Xavier was a distant second with 92 points. Bonduel took third with 81 points, while Menominee Indian tallied 64 points to take sixth.

Davenport, Komanekin lead Eagles' track and field teams in Marion

Several area individuals enjoyed strong afternoons of action at the Marion Invitational on April 24 in Marion.

The Menominee Indian girls team placed second with 93 points, behind only Manawa (217). The Gresham/Bowler girls claimed third with 46 points, while the Marion girls scored eight points and took seventh.

The Gresham/Bowler boys came in third with 72 points, behind Manawa (163) and Iola-Scandinavia (148). Menominee Indian grabbed fourth with 61½ points. Wolf River Lutheran (6) took sixth, while Marion (4½) was seventh.

Gillett boys, Bonduel girls win cross-country invitational titles

Several area cross-country runners turned in strong performances at a loaded Shawano Invitational on Sept. 10 at Shawano Community High School.

All boys and girls runners ran together before being broken down into three divisions. The Gillett boys and Bonduel girls each placed first in the Division 3 field.

Shawano and Oconto Falls each competed in Division 2, while Suring, Marion, Menominee Indian, Gresham/Bowler and Wolf River Lutheran joined Bonduel and Gillett in Division 3.

The Gresham/Bowler co-op, Marion, Tigerton and Wolf River Lutheran track and field teams all competed at the Division 3 St. Mary Catholic Regional on May 23.

To advance to sectionals, individuals or relay teams had to place in the top four in their events.

Witt-Birn girls win home track and field invitational

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team accumulated 150 points to win the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Invitational on May 2 in Wittenberg.

The Witt-Birn boys placed fourth with 91 points, while Bonduel came in fifth with 68 points. The Gresham/Bowler boys took seventh with 40½ points.

The Bonduel girls came in third with 108 points, while Gresham/Bowler was sixth with 34 points.

Reese Rogowski led the Witt-Birn girls team with first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.9 seconds), 200 (26.34), 400 (58.4) and long jump (17 feet, 4 inches).
