Dickman earns all-state hockey honor

Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School hockey player Owen Dickman has been honored by the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association (WHCA).

Dickman, a forward on the Antigo and Witt-Birn co-op hockey team, was named honorable mention for the WHCA boys hockey all-state teams for the 2023-24 season.

His teammate, Eli Kassler, also a forward, was named to the second team. It was Kassler’s second year being named all-state.

District 9 bowlers win Wisconsin All Star Challenge

Both the boys and girls teams from the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club District 9 (Wausau region) claimed first place at the All Star Challenge on March 9 at Riviera Lanes in Green Bay.

The girls team included Birnamwood freshman Holly Orgeman.

Bowlers bowled three individual games of bowling to start the day and then went into 10 baker games to finish qualifying. Baker games are when five bowlers are on a team and each bowls two frames.

Birnamwood’s Orgeman takes second at state bowling meet

Birnamwood freshman Holly Orgeman, a bowler with the D.C. Everest/Wittenberg varsity girls bowling team, grabbed second place in the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club (WIHSBC) state meet at the Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley this past weekend.

Orgeman bowls in District 9 (Wausau area). The freshman earned the first seed after semifinal rounds and automatically advanced to the championship ground during match play.

Birnamwood freshman heading to All-Star Challenge

Holly Orgeman, a freshman from Birnamwood, will be one of five girls to represent the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club District 9 at the All-Star Challenge on Saturday, March 9, at Riviera Lanes in Green Bay.

The All-Star team is made up of the top five female and top five male bowlers from each district in the state, following the high school season.

District 9 includes teams from the Wausau area — including Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Gresham, Clintonville, Marion, Stevens Point, Rhinelander, Merrill and Tomahawk.

Chargers shut down Northland Pines for doubleheader sweep

After watching the girls take care of business earlier in the night, it was the boys turn to take the court as Wittenberg-Birnamwood played host to the Northland Pines Eagles on Jan. 29. After weathering a barrage of 3-point baskets in the first half, the Chargers got things rolling using a 16-4 run to open the second half to pull away for the 57-34 victory.

At this point in the basketball season, most teams have two goals in mind.

First, you want to be as healthy as possible leading into the stretch run. Second, you want to be playing your best basketball heading into the playoffs.

When it comes to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, not only are they healthy, but at 16-2 overall, they have been playing great basketball all season and that didn’t stop Jan. 29.

Witt-Birn schools updating Title I literacy plan

Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District is trying to figure out how to close its achievement gaps for math and literacy, and it plans to get community input about what needs to be done.

Nicole Steigerwald, one of the district’s literacy coaches, presented Witt-Birn’s Title I plan to the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board on Jan. 22 to show what’s being done to even out test scores between the schools, socio-economic classes and races.

Bonduel’s fast start leads them to a victory over Wittenberg-Birnamwood

In a matchup featuring two of the best teams in the CWC Large Conference, the Bonduel Bears (13-1) faced off against the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers (6-7) on Jan. 19.

Looking to keep their unbeaten record alive in conference, it was the visiting Bears who got off to a strong start, which had the Chargers looking for answers. Led by several big runs and terrific 3-point shooting, the Bears raced out to an early double-digit lead and never looked back as they took care of the Chargers 63-41.

Shawano skaters lose twice in Antigo

Antigo’s hockey team, which includes players from Wittenberg-Birnamwood, defeated Shawano/Bonduel 3-1 Dec. 28, the second day of a tournament in Antigo.

The first two goals scored came in the second period. First, Owen Dickman scored at 7:57 with an assist from Eli Kassler. Then, at 14:28, Collin Tiedemann scored with an assist again by Kassler.

Antigo went up 3-0 in the third period on a Kassler goal at 10:40, with an assist from Liam Burt.

Max Huntington scored Shawano/Bonduel’s only goal at 11:35, with an assist from Hunter Jones.

Chargers battle for hard-fought basketball win

In what was a defensive battle most of the night, the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers were locked in a tightly contested game with Antigo to open their 2023-24 hoops season Nov. 27. All it took was a 27-point effort from Jett Rogowski and some timely defense as a late game steal and some clutch free throws sealed the deal in what was a 50-46 non-conference win for the Chargers.
