Suring girls, Lena boys co-op win M&O team titles

The Suring, Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy and Gillett track and field teams all competed in the Marinette & Oconto Conference meet on May 12 in Suring, with some top team and individual finishes between the three programs.

The Suring girls tallied 200½ points to win the M&O team title. The Lena/STAA boys scored 163 points to place first.

Lena/STAA was second on the girls side with 136 points, while Gillett took sixth with 52 points. The Gillett boys scored 110 points to earn third, while Suring tallied 58 points to come in sixth.

Oconto Falls girls, Bonduel boys win track and field invite

The Oconto Falls girls and Bonduel boys track and field teams each placed first at the Gillett/Suring Invite on April 24 in Suring.

The Oconto Falls girls team accumulated 175 points to take first. Suring was second with 139½ points, while Bonduel was third with 101 points. Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy claimed fourth with 85½ points, while Gillett scored 36 points and took seventh.

The Bonduel boys tallied 148 points to earn first. Lena/STAA scored 124 points to finish second. Gillett (90) placed fourth, while Suring (58) was sixth.

6 teams crowned at Suring’s 3-on-3 tournament

Six teams were crowned champions during the Suring 3-on-3 basketball tournament on April 1 in Suring.

The tournament, which was sponsored by the Suring Labor Day Celebration, included 48 total teams competing in boys and girls divisions from grades 3-8.

The Oconto Falls White squad won the girls grade 3-4 division, with Molly Fisher, Karli Detaege, Kaylee Berg and Brielle Baumier playing for the team.

The Fallz Ballz team of Nyah Gardebrecht, Calli Bursa, Karington Beaman and Ava Holtz emerged as the champions of the girls grade 5-6 division.

Athlete Profile: Christine Sleeter

Suring High School’s Christine Sleeter is already off to a strong start to her senior track and field season this spring.

As a junior, Sleeter placed second at state in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) also also qualified in pole vault (9 feet).

Sleeter won a pair of events during an indoor meet on March 21 in Oconto Falls. She cleared 5-4 to win the high jump and 8-6 to win the pole vault. The senior won the high jump (5-2) and was second in the pole vault (8-6) at the Rosholt-Webko-Politos Invitational on March 31 in Stevens Point.

Bailey receives Jim Nedelcoff ‘Catalyst’ Award

Suring High School senior Mackenzie Bailey was named the girls recipient of the Jim Nedelcoff ‘Catalyst’ Award and honored during the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association banquet on April 2 at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

The award is presented annually to one girls and boys basketball player who “exemplify the starting five qualities stressed by Nedelcoff in his hall of fame career.” Nedelcoff is in the Wisconsin high school coaches hall of fame for basketball and football.

Peterson, Kietlinski, Sleeter take 1st at invitational

Gillett's Alex Peterson, Gresham/Bowler's Emmitt Kietlinski and Suring's Christine Sleeter all earned first-place finishes during the Rosholt-Webko-Politos Invitational on March 31 in Stevens Point.

Peterson broke the invitational record in the boys 3,200-meter run by 12 seconds after turning in a time of 9 minutes, 43.76 seconds.

Emmitt Kietlinski won the boys triple jump with a top leap of 43 feet, 11 inches. Sleeter won the girls high jump after clearing 5-2.

4 area boys basketball players make M&O teams

Four area high school boys basketball players were named to Marinette & Oconto Conference teams this winter.

Gillett senior Austin VandeCorput and sophomore Jesse DeBauch made the all-conference second team. Suring senior Ethan Lally also was a second teamer. Lena senior Reed Hosking earned a spot on the honorable mention list.

VandeCorput averaged 14.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.2 steals and 1.8 assists during M&O play to earn a spot on the second team.

Comins, Rattin make M&O honorable mention wrestling team

Lena’s Dylan Comins and Suring/Gillett’s Keegan Rattin were both named to the Marinette & Oconto Conference honorable mention team in their senior seasons.

Comins capped his season competing at the state tournament in Madison. He placed fourth in the Division 3 120-pound weight class and had a 52-11 overall record.

Comins had just one dual match loss on the season, coming against Coleman, which placed 13 wrestlers on the all-conference first team.

Kaczmarek named top girls basketball player in M&O

Gillett Secondary School’s Carleigh Kaczmarek capped her senior season by being named the Most Outstanding Player in the Marinette & Oconto Conference.

Kaczmarek was one of four seniors to make the all-conference first team.

The one non-senior to make the first team was Lena sophomore Eva Brooks.

Suring senior Christine Sleeter landed on the second team, while senior teammate Mackenzie Bailey made the honorable mention list. Gillett sophomore Cilena Guns and Lena senior Natalie McNurlen were also honorable mentions this winter.
