Donald (Don) Edward Gutt, 92, of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, in Green Bay.

Don was born in the Town of Almon, Shawano County, on May 31, 1927, to the late Paul and Viola (Dahlke) Gutt. Don was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bowler. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Regina, Wisconsin, and graduated from Bowler High School in 1944.

Robert W. Feinen Sr.

Robert W. Feinen Sr., 88, of Shawano, passed away peacefully in Shawano on Aug. 2, 2019, surrounded by his family. Robert was born on March 30, 1931, in Buffalo, New York, to the late Martin and Suzanne (Brondo) Feinen.

Robert graduated from the University of Buffalo. He proudly served in the United States Army upon graduation.

On June 19, 1970, Robert was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Pomeroy. Joyce preceded Robert in death on September 30, 2016.

David Adam Schommer, 84, of Shawano, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019, surrounded by his family. David was born on July 4, 1935, in Stockbridge to the late Joseph and Philomena (Franzen) Schommer.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served proudly until being honorably discharged. David was united in marriage on Sept. 2, 1961, to his polka partner and love of his life “Poopsie” Audrey Zuleger in Appleton.

DNR raises new concern over lake water levels

State environmental officials have floated a new concern about fluctuating water levels on the Wolf River and Shawano Lake that could imperil a compromise reached last year over how much water should be retained at the Shawano dam, located just off Richmond Street in Shawano.

Based on boater safety concerns, an agreement was reached last year to maintain water levels at the dam during the summer at the volume they had been kept at for some 30 years.

It was agreed that water levels would be lowered during the fall and winter.

Farmers market kicks off year with FRESH project walk/run

A 5K Scrabble Fun Walk/Run will highlight the first Shawano Farmers Market of the season June 15 at Franklin Park, 235 S. Washington St., Shawano.

The walk/run, which is open to all ages, is a fundraiser for the FRESH Project and will start at 9 a.m. at their booth. Participants will travel from booth to booth at their own pace and collect Scrabble letters to make a word. When the event wraps up at 11 a.m., the participant with the most word points will win a grand prize.

Man drowns in Shawano Lake

A 56-year-old West Allis man drowned in Shawano Lake on Friday after trying to rescue his dog, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. Steven Olewinski and his wife, Mary Jo, along with their dogs, were in a boat on the lake near Weber’s Point in the northwest corner of the lake. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., one of the dogs jumped into the water and Olewinski went in to retrieve it, the Sheriff’s Department said. Olewinski drifted away from the boat and was unable to reach the life preserver his wife had thrown to him.
