BOYS WRESTLING: Shawano places sixth at Hodag Scramble

Shawano’s boys wrestling team finished in sixth place at the Rhinelander Hodag Scramble on Dec. 21. The Hawks scored 138 points, compared to 235 for their opponents.

Drake Herm earned a first-place title for Shawano.

“Drake continues to wrestle well and had a strong showing today,” coach Mike Homan said. “He was great on his feet as usual and continued to push the pace in his matches. He is a lot of fun to watch when he wrestles.”

For the Shawano/Bonduel boys hockey team, Dec. 19 was one of those nights where you not only start poorly, but finish poorly, too, leading to a less than appealing result.

The new El Jefe Mexican Bar and Grill, 201 N. Airport Road, Shawano, almost didn’t happen.

“El Jefe came about, the opportunity was there for us, but honestly, at first I refused,” Perla Hernandez said. “I didn’t want any more. But my husband, Sergio, always had this idea, like in the back of his head. He wanted to do something very different. So that’s why it all started.”

Dotcom Branding to expand operations

A longtime vacant building in the city of Shawano’s 200 block of North Main Street could soon see signs of life again.

The Shawano Common Council approved a development agreement between the Shawano Redevelopment Authority and Dotcom Branding LLC, a company based in Shawano, to renovate the building at 201 N. Main St., known as the Muehl property. The RDA will provide a $50,000 grant that will go toward the renovations.

Shawano hockey team gets first two wins

Shawano/Bonduel extended its winning streak to two with a 9-4 win over Chequamegon/Phillips/Butternut on Dec. 16 in Park Falls.

Chequamegon took an early 2-0 lead in the first period before Cam Schroeder put Shawano on the board at 5:41 to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team going into the second period.

Chequamegon scored at 0:40 to go up 3-1.

That’s when Shawano lit up the board. The Hawks scored four times in the second period.

Shawano girls scrimmage during Packers’ halftime

The 77,275 fans at Lambeau Field on Dec. 17 were treated to a different kind of football at halftime.

Four teams of high school girls — including a team from Shawano Community High School — competed in a set of flag football scrimmage games as the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers took their intermission.

“I was nervous at first, but once we started playing, I didn’t think about it,” said Abby Bystol, one of the girls who played both offense and defense. “The atmosphere was amazing.”

Taxi fares in Shawano could increase

The city of Shawano’s taxi service could be raising its fares as the Shawano Common Council approved annual agreements Dec. 13 with the company running the service.

The rates for City Cab are currently $4 within city boundaries and $3 for the elderly and handicapped, with an additional $1.25 per mile outside the city’s boundaries.

Shawano water rates to go up 23%

Water rates for average residential customers of the Shawano Water and Sewer Utility will increase by 23%, or $5.43, monthly effective Dec. 31, according to the utility.

The cost for average residential customers using approximately 3,000 gallons of water a month will increase from $23.71 to $29.14, according to a rate order the Public Service Commission issued on Dec 4.

The above amounts include the Fire Protection Charge the utility collects for hydrant maintenance and other costs it incurs association with firefighting.

BATTLE OF THE BIRDS: Hawks hockey team tamed by Cardinals, Eagles

The Shawano/Bonduel boys hockey team had 27 shots on goal against the Stevens Point Pacelli Cardinals on Dec. 7 but could only come up with one goal in their 5-1 loss.

The Cardinals scored once in the first period and twice in the second to give them a 3-0 lead before the Hawks finally scored.

At 5:57 in the third period, Gavin Bundt scored with an assist from Karson Stoss to make it 3-1. However, the Cardinals scored twice more in the period.
