Four Challenge Academy graduates come from Shawano, Keshena

With a festive holiday atmosphere, the Wisconsin Challenge Academy celebrated the graduation of its 51st class during a Dec. 16 ceremony at Baraboo High School.

The graduating class featured 98 cadets from 33 counties, including four cadets from Shawano and Menominee counties. Local graduates were Aaliyah Pyatskowit, Christian Norman and Gunnar Majewski, all of Shawano, and Peter Hawpetoss, of Keshena.

Shawano girls continue to roll with another big win

The Shawano girls kicked off the second half of their season with a trip to Bay Conference rival Seymour on Jan. 4 and returned home with another win.

Winners of four of their last five entering the game, the Hawks (12-3) have been on quite a run this season and appear set to challenge for the Bay Conference crown.

Shawano skaters lose twice in Antigo

Antigo’s hockey team, which includes players from Wittenberg-Birnamwood, defeated Shawano/Bonduel 3-1 Dec. 28, the second day of a tournament in Antigo.

The first two goals scored came in the second period. First, Owen Dickman scored at 7:57 with an assist from Eli Kassler. Then, at 14:28, Collin Tiedemann scored with an assist again by Kassler.

Antigo went up 3-0 in the third period on a Kassler goal at 10:40, with an assist from Liam Burt.

Max Huntington scored Shawano/Bonduel’s only goal at 11:35, with an assist from Hunter Jones.

Shawano students hold successful food drive

Students at Olga Brener Intermediate School collected hundreds of food items during their December Traveling Trophy Challenge.

Each month, the school’s students compete against each other in a challenge with a winner declared at each grade level.

The winning classroom gets to display the trophy for a month, and students receive an extra recess while the teacher receives an extra break.

December’s challenge is always a food drive. This year, the food was donated to the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center (SAFPARC).

Shawano boys basketball team fends off Clippers at Sun Drop Shootout

Unlike the girls, wins have been hard to come by for the Shawano boys as they entered the Sun Drop Shootout on a three-game losing streak and sitting at 2-8 overall on the season. Looking to get back on track against a talented Sturgeon Bay squad, the Hawks found themselves locked in a battle that went down to the final minutes of regulation.

Defense leads to offense as Shawano girls basketball team routs Ashwaubenon

The Shawano Girls basketball team has gotten off to a great start this season, and that continued Dec. 26 as they ran their record to 10-3 this season. Facing off against the Ashwaubenon Jaguars as part of the 15th annual Sun Drop Shootout, it was the Hawks getting back to their roots, making the Jaguars uncomfortable throughout.

Drowning victim’s body recovered from Lulu Lake

A 78-year-old man was found dead at Lulu Lake early Christmas Day morning, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Lt. Jesse Sperberg, concerned family members called the sheriff’s office Dec. 24 saying the man was missing around 4:30 p.m.

He went fishing on Lulu Lake that day and had not returned home.

People found his vehicle near a boat landing and some ice fishing gear on the lake.

GIRLS WRESTLING: Shawano wins fourth straight tourney

Wrestling at the Rhinelander Hodag Scramble on Dec. 21 game Shawano its fourth straight tournament victory, outscoring their opponents 106-86.

“These girls are really starting to mold together, and they are learning more and more each week,” coach Mike Homan said. “It is very exciting to watch them grow so much.”

Onna Hermann took first place.
