Gyros back in downtown Shawano

Downtown Gyros, Subs and More is one of the newer restaurants in the flourishing Shawano food scene.

Located at 230 E. Green Bay St. in Shawano, it’s been open since Oct. 17. Despite being open for only 3 1/2 months, Downtown Gyros’ unique and still-evolving menu has already attracted repeat customers and is becoming an integral part of the revitalized shopping and dining district in the heart of Shawano.

Shawano boys defeat Green Bay United

Shawano’s boys wrestlers continue to score big and are gearing up for a conference title this year.

On Jan. 25, Shawano defeated Green Bay United 63-15 at Green Bay West. At 5-0 in the conference and 12-4 overall, the Hawks are on the brink of notching their sixth straight conference title. The team was scheduled to play against Xavier on Feb. 1.

The Jan. 25 meet started with forfeits and 106 and 113 pounds, then at 120, Alex Montour won a tight match 10-9.

Shawano hopes to get railroad renovation grant

The Shawano Common Council gave its approval for the city to seek a grant that would help upgrade some of the railroad tracks in the community and hopefully improve commerce as well.

County Board leaving airport behind

The Shawano County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution and memorandum of understanding that will put the Shawano Airport in its rearview mirror in less than a year.

The county will transfer airport ownership and responsibility entirely to the city of Shawano effective Jan. 1, 2025, or upon final approval of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Aeronautics, whichever occurs first.

“In short, it’s pretty much that the county is out of the airport business, and the city is solely responsible for the airport,” Board Chairman Tom Kautza said.

BOYS WRESTLING: Drake Herm makes finals at Sheboygan North Invite

Drake Herm made the finals and came away with a second-place finish for the second year in a row at the Sheboygan North Invite held Jan. 20.

Owen Montour placed fourth.

“Drake and Owen have been doing a great job lately earning bonus points and really wrestling good matches,” coach Mike Homan said.

Kody Popelka finished in sixth place.

Taking seventh place were Dane Hodkiewicz, Carsen Herm and Connor Chelberg.

Dylan Gartner placed eighth.

Shawano 57, Menasha 17

Shawano downed Menasha 57-17 in a dual meet Jan. 18.

Shawano’s girl wrestlers hit string of tough opponents

With a limited participation against 103 other teams at Wausau West, Shawano’s wrestlers captured fourth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes Jan. 20.

Courtney Schenk was Shawano’s fourth-place finisher.

“She did a great job opening up her offensive attacks and pushing the pace in her matches,” coach Mike Homan said. “We talked last week about how she needed to open up her offense, and that is exactly what she did today. She did a great job attacking and getting to the legs of her opponents. It is great to see her wrestling well as we near the postseason.”

Shawano announces summer entertainment lineup

The snow and cold temperatures indicate it’s winter, but the city of Shawano has already finalized plans for its summer music lineups.

Thursdayz at Franklin will be going into its sixth season with a lot of talented musicians gracing the bandshell at Franklin Park, 235 S. Washington St. Bands start playing at 6 p.m. every Thursday in June, July and August. For those who get hungry, there will be food trucks on the street, and nonprofit organizations will be roaming the grounds selling tickets for 50/50 raffles.

GIRLS WRESTLING: Shawano beat by New London

Shawano’s girl wrestlers are back at, winning 18-9 in a dual meet at New London on Jan. 11.

“We started with an exhibition match at 132 that had Breleigh Thornock earning a fall in 5:29,” coach Mike Homan said. “It was a back-and-forth match, and Breleigh did a great job securing the pin at the end.”

The next match was Jenna Moede at 114. She wrestled Sophia Hull-Riggs and earned a fall in 1:42. The next match was at 120 when Onna Hermann took on Thressa Voight.

BOYS WRESTLING: Shawano defeats New London

Shawano’s boys wrestling team improved to 10-4 following its 42-31 win at New London on Jan. 11.

The dual started with the 150-pound match. Shawano lost that one but gained points back when Carsen Herm pinned Owen Ross. Shawano then earned a decision at 165 pounds when Drew Chelberg defeated Phoenix Fletcher 9-3.

Unfortunately, the Hawks found themselves in a 21-9 deficit after dropping matches at 175, 190 and 215.

Shawano-born filmmaker brings latest comedy to town

A film coming to Shawano Cinema on Jan. 29 is expected to bring about the nostalgia of black-and-white silent cinema, slapstick comedy and more as it focuses on Wisconsin life in the woods.

Produced by filmmaker Kurt Ravenwood, who grew up in Shawano as Kurt Raether, “Hundreds of Beavers” was made almost entirely in Wisconsin and focuses on drunken applejack salesman Jean Kayak, who has a thriving alcohol operation in the forest until it’s sabotaged by some beavers.
