Naberhood recognized at state, national levels

Shawano’s Naberhood Plaza has become the happening hotspot for the city’s downtown, but now it has a couple of awards that could make it even more attractive.

In early April, the city learned that it was selected as a winner for the American Public Works Association’s 2024 Wisconsin Chapter Project of the Year Award for small cities and rural communities. According to Jennifer Barlas with APWA, the award is handed out for historical restoration and preservation work with structures where there’s a strong alliance among municipalities, architects and contractors.

City taxi fares could increase next year

Taxi fares in Shawano could be increasing in 2025, but the city-owned company is still being examined to see if it is necessary.

City Finance Director Greg Smith told the Shawano Common Council on May 8 that there is a possibility the fares could increase 50 cents next year, although a $1 increase in the fares could not be ruled out. This would the first time fares have increased since the city started its taxi service in 2008.

Sacred Heart fundraiser celebrates 135 years

Sacred Heart Catholic School is celebrating its 135th anniversary with its first celebration dance and fundraiser May 17.

The event will take place from 6-10 p.m. in the gymnasium and lobby of the school, 124 E. Center St., Shawano.

Parents given ‘Wake Up Call’ about children and drugs

Gone are the days when teenagers would only hide pot in their sock drawer.

Today’s youths are more clever and have many more options available, according to a pair of women from the Addiction Resource Council. Jessica Brost and Hailey King led a “Wake Up Call” program for parents May 1 at Shawano Community Middle School.

“When we are desperate to do it, we will go to desperate measures,” Brost said.

Women Who Care passes $200K milestone

The members of 100+ Women Who Care Shawano County have shown in recent years that benevolent giving can make a difference, and on May 1, the organization surpassed the significant milestone of $200,000.

Shawano Arbor Day 2024 kept in family

The Shawano Tree Advisory Committee kept it in the family this year as it celebrated Arbor Day on May 1 with its awards and tree planting.

Marilyn Kroenke, a committee member, and her husband, Ken, received the individual Friend of Nature Award for their tree planting efforts at their home on Gannon Court, while the city park and recreation department received the group award. The tree planted this year in Franklin Park was done in honor of the late Bill Erdman, who chaired the committee for a number of years.

Feedback shows limited info impacted referendum

Shawano School District officials have been preaching full transparency in recent months, but a listening session following the failed April referendum indicates that transparency needs some tweaks.

The listening session on April 23 was the last of three the district held in conference with its referendum consultants, Hoffman Planning and Design. A common theme that came out of the evening about the $54.5 million referendum not getting passed was that the devil was in the details — specifically a lack of them and how they were distributed.

Felix and Fingers tickling ivories in Shawano

The wild animals that call Shawano Lake County Park home might have a hard time getting to sleep on April 26 as the Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos team comes to the pavilion for a fundraiser benefiting Shawano Dollars for Scholars.

Although the term “dueling pianos” might indicate the two featured performers are going to try and one-up each other in the songs they play, the event is expected to actually be more of an interactive engagement between the pianists and the audience, according to Mike Sherman, regional entertainment director for Felix and Fingers.

Young takes oath as newest Shawano alderman

Jack Young joined a pair of returning aldermen and Mayor Bruce Milavitz in taking their oaths of office serving on the Shawano Common Council.

The council’s organizational meeting was held April 16.

Aldermen Jim Hauer and John Hoeffs also took their oaths to serve another two years on the council.

District 3 Alderman Kevin Barkow was unanimously elected to serve as council president.

The six alderpople approved of a pair of resolutions that stipulated appointments to various city and area committees and commissions by the mayor and council president.

North Airport Drive under construction

North Airport Drive (County Road HHH) from East Green Bay Street north to Gumaer Road is closed to through traffic weekdays for the next five weeks.

Reconstruction of the roadway began April 17 and is expected to run through May 24. The road will be reconstructed within the existing road right-of-way.

It will be closed to through traffic from 6 a.m. Mondays through 4:30 p.m. Fridays. It will be open weekends.
