Shawano parks see uptick in vandalism, other criminal calls

The Shawano Police Department is stepping up its efforts to catch those who are responsible for damaging city parks in recent weeks.

According to Lt. Mike Musolff, most of the events are happening in the evening hours, when it’s possible there could be witnesses seeing the vandalism taking place. As a result, the police are stepping up patrols of the city’s over two dozen public parks at night, which includes walking through the parks and approaching to anyone who is in the parks at that time for questioning. Bike patrols might also be possible.

The frosty smoothie bowl trend that has been spreading across the country for the last few years has just arrived in Shawano with the opening of Sun Sorbet in the heart of the revitalized Main Street retail area.

Sun Sorbet, owned by Sarah and Brandon Blashe, of Pella, offers a menu of 10 Beach Bowls, their signature phrase used to describe menu items available in the eatery. Sun Sorbet offers its own spin on the acai bowl trend with light and refreshing offerings of a variety of sorbets and healthy toppings.

The shop replaced Tumbleweed, an apparel store.

Rhubarb fest returns to Shawano for 16th year

History will come alive June 15, and so will the food at Shawano’s Rhubarb Festival at Heritage Park, 524 N. Franklin St., Shawano.

This is the 16th year for the festival, and the fun goes on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, with parking available in an open lot behind Old Tabor Church.

Two Shawano children meet gold(en) standard

Many children try to be good, but in Shawano, two of them are now considered golden.

Twig’s Beverage announced its first-ever Golden Girl and Golden Boy on June 1 at Sun Drop Dayz, with Ramona Meidam and Casey Johnson taking those titles for the next 12 months.

More than 30 fourth-grade students applied in the contest, according to Jaime Lee, who created the contest. The Sun Drop spokesmodel wanted to provide the opportunity for children to pursue their dreams and for her to work with them to be even better than they are now.

Historical plaques going up around Shawano

The city of Shawano hopes to look to the future, but there are some who hope that future can be infused with some of the community’s past.

Michael Oberle with the Shawano County Historical Society noted that Shawano Has History, a project more than two years in the making as part of Leadership Shawano County, has started putting up bronze plaques around the downtown Shawano area. Plaques have been installed at Franklin Park, Stubborn Brothers Brewery and Cornerstone Chiropractic so far, with Oberle hoping that 20 plaques will be affixed to properties by the end of this summer.

J Doggs open at permanent site

After serving their food from a food truck since 2016, Jeremy Weed and Amber Arneson are now working out of a permanent home at 136 S. Main St., Shawano.

J Doggs’ menu includes hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Jburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, mushroom and Swiss burgers, Chicago hot dogs, Jdoggs, taco dogs and regular hot dogs.

Two golf simulators and a putting green can be found in the back of the building.

Shawano’s Memorial Day ceremony was one full of faith May 27 at Woodlawn Cemetery as Pastor Scott Ludford drew parallels between veterans’ sacrifice and biblical teachings.

That’s how Shawano Community High School cross country assistant coach Luke Wojta summed up the four-year careers of seniors Grace Chelberg, Ethan Onesti and Lillian Guenther as they signed their college letters of intent at a May 15 ceremony at the school.

“If you take the first letters of these five key ingredients, they spell out PRIDE,” Wojta said. “Lily, Grace and Ethan have shown Shawano Hawk pride each and every day they have attended Shawano High School.”

Shawano honors Hometown Heroes

Shawano’s hometown heroes will be honored through a new public program created by members of the 2024 Leadership Shawano County class.

Past and present members of the Armed Forces will be recognized on banners that will be hung along Main Street from Elizabeth Street to County Road B from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

Samantha Sperberg, a member of the leadership class, said presentations for community projects are introduced to each group at the start of their yearlong class.

Hinze challenging for longtime Republican seat

The Republicans found a candidate to get behind for the 6th Assembly District election, and now Democrats have found their own as Shirley Hinze, of Shawano, has announced she’s pursuing the legislative seat.

Hinze said she’s running in the hopes that her community benefits from the actions the Wisconsin Legislature takes.

“In the 10 years I’ve been here (in Shawano), this community has voted Republican,” Hinze said. “I live in this community, and what do we get? Nothing. They keep voting for this and this, and there’s nothing coming back into the district.”
