Oz brought to life in Box in the Wood musical

A classic Midwestern story has arrived at the Mielke Arts Center and will be checking off all the boxes — tornadic activity, proving you can go home again, a country girl journeying to the big city and, most of all, an epic battle over shoes.

Box in the Wood Theatre Guild will perform “The Wizard of Oz” for the next two weekends, bringing to life a musical made familiar to all generations, whether it was a family tradition to watch on television on Thanksgiving night or owned on DVD or Blu-Ray to rewatch again and again on a random schedule.

City of Shawano plans for more downtown parking

With the purchase of 202 and 208 N. Washington St. (at the corner of North Washington and West Fifth streets), the city of Shawano is working toward creating more parking downtown.

Budget timelines posed a challenge for the city.

By the time the neighboring property use was determined, the city was outside its time frame for the 2024 budget.

This means the city will will need to wait until 2025 to be able fully construct the parking lot.

City spending $16,900 to kill invasive species

The Shawano Park and Recreation Commission is taking more aggressive steps to fight back against invasive plant species at four of the city’s parks.

The commission approved a proposal from Green Elf, a new Shawano company, to spend $16,900 to kill invasive plants at Kuckuk, Sturgeon, Lieg and Channel parks that have been a challenge to the city. All four of them are along waterways, and the city wants to eliminate the plants to put in native plants and improve access to the water.

Street reconstruction projects underway

Summer road construction projects are underway in Shawano.

East Fifth Street from North Main Street to Hamlin Street is undergoing utility work and street reconstruction. East Fifth Street is now fully closed from Union Street to Hamlin Street.

Throughout June and until July 12, single blocks within the work zone will be fully closed for utility reconstruction progressing westerly. The entire work zone will be partially pulverized and on gravel until July 15 when full closure to through-traffic will begin until completion of the project in September.

De Pere man wanted for attempted homicide

Law enforcement is looking for a De Pere man wanted for attempted homicide and other charges stemming from an incident May 24 in Shawano.

Jordan K. Feemster, 31, was charged June 11 with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless endangering safety, and misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property. Feemster was not taken into custody, and Shawano-Menominee Circuit Court Judge William Kussel Jr. ordered a body-only arrest warrant.

Kuckuk gets playground equipment, athletic courts

Kuckuk Park was flowing with visitors June 19 as the city of Shawano celebrated the conclusion of a $2.5 million upgrade made possible through the use of Community Development Block Grant funding.

Shawano hires new public works director

A new public works director will be coming on board for Shawano in July after the Shawano Common Council chose from three finalists at the end of May.

Mike Mahloch, currently the utilities superintendent for the village of Bellevue, was selected to be the public works director. He previously worked for the city of Shawano as a water and sewer operator, leaving in 2012, according to City Administrator Eddie Sheppard.

“He has a little bit of a history,” Sheppard said.

Council gives liquor license to theater

The Shawano Common Council reversed a decision it made last month and voted June 12 to give Zeke Heling, owner of Shawano Cinema, a liquor license.

Part of the reason was attributed to Heling sending the city of Shawano a five-page letter explaining his intentions for the liquor license, but there was also the discovery that the city had access to more liquor licenses than previously realized.

Hawks fly to the top of all-conference choices

Shawano athletes on the baseball diamond, golf course, and track and field courses were chosen to the first teams for their respective sports in the Bay Conference, with one player a unanimous selection.

Junior infielder Pete Bruette was a unanimous selection for the all-conference baseball team.

The tennis doubles team of George Buerman and Tristan Sheldon were named to the first team on their court.
