B main to victory lane for Michonski on Hall of Fame Night

Fans came out in droves as the Shawano Speedway honored its two most recent inductees into the track’s Hall of Fame as Bob Maas and the late Mark Mitchell were honored at intermission. Cheers, smiles, and tears were present as family and friends celebrated the careers of these two men.

Shawano County Fair going ahead

SHAWANO — The Shawano County Fair will go on as scheduled in September, in spite of numerous other fairs statewide — including the Wisconsin State Fair — canceling this year over COVID-19 concerns.

The Shawano Area Agricultural Society voted at a meeting Monday to go forward with the fair as planned, according to its president, Dale Hodkiewicz.

Week 2 action warms up cool night at speedway

SHAWANO — Tom Naeyaert, Travis VanStraten, Tyler Sobiesczyk and Marcus Yarie collected their first feature wins of the season on a cool Saturday night at Shawano Speedway.

Tanner Westphal became the first driver to earn back-to-back victories after also winning on opening night.

Sobiesczyk grabbed the lead on lap two from Bryce Clements and survived five yellow flags to pick up the win in the IMCA Sport Mod feature event.

Tom Naeyaert cruised to a Late Model feature win at Shawano Speedway on Saturday. Marcus Yarie (IMCA Modified), Tyler Sobiesczyk (IMCA Sport Mod), Travis VanStraten (IMCA Stock Car) and Tanner Westphal (Mighty 4) joined Naeyaert in victory lane. Entertainment returns to Shawano Speedway

SHAWANO — In an area deprived of sports, Shawano Speedway provided some much-needed entertainment during its opening night on Saturday.

Even with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place, the speedway grounds were still full of people. Brad Luepke, the speedway’s marketing and promotions manager, said fans were respectful of each other’s space and spread themselves out.

Shawano Speedway given the green light

SHAWANO — After several weeks of careful planning, race tracks around the state are opening up. Shawano Speedway has a practice night scheduled for May 30 before the first week of the season on June 6.

Shawano Speedway waiting for the green light

SHAWANO — Like so many other places across the state and country, the Shawano Speedway is waiting for the green light to start its season because of the coronavirus.

The speedway was set to open its 2020 season this Saturday, but with the Safer at Home order in place, the first night of racing is up in the air.

“It’s one day, one week, one hour at a time because it seems to constantly be changing,” said Brad Luepke, the speedway’s marketing and promotions manager on how the season was being approached.

Lack of speedway racing will impact city, too

SHAWANO — The Shawano Speedway may be quiet in 2020, but the economic impact could be deafening.

The speedway helps Shawano on a number of financial fronts during the course of a season, the start of which has been postponed. Worse, there is the potential for no season at all if COVID-19 cannot be slowed.
