Champions crowned on speedway’s final race night

Shawano Speedway hosted its final races of the 2020 season on Saturday, with five drivers being crowned champions by the end of the night.

Troy Springborn and Ron Berna battled for the Late Model title, with Springborn winning Saturday’s feature race to finish first in the standings. Berna finished second in the feature race and in the standings.

Springborn, Schmidt enter Speedway Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame night 2.0 saw Gary Springborn and Corny Schmidt enter the Shawano Speedway Hall of Fame.

Opening ceremonies saw Bob Maas — enshrined earlier in the year — driving his 1956 Ford with Corny and Gary carrying the American flags. Hall of famer Jon Schultz rode shotgun carrying the Underdog flag in remembrance of fellow 2020 inductee Mark Mitchell. During intermission, large groups of friends and families surrounded Gary and Corny as they were welcomed into the Hall of Fame.

Raddant wins slugfest with Naeyaert

Kyle Raddant outdueled Tom Naeyaert in an exciting, down to the wire race for his first Late Model win of the year Saturday at Shawano Speedway.

Brad Wedde prevailed in a three-car Mighty Four battle, while it almost felt like déjà vu as Konnor Wilinski, Chucky Forstner and Jayden Schmidt returned to victory lane for the second week in a row.

Raddant started on the pole of the Late Model feature, took the lead at the drop of the green, and immediately began to receive pressure from Naeyaert and Brett Swedberg. The trio in fact battled three-wide for the lead.

Current points leaders try to build leads on Night of Champions

The 2019 track champions were honored Saturday at Shawano Speedway as part of the Night of Champions. The action on the track saw the 2020 points battles heat up as the season nears its end.

The IMCA Sport Mods began the feature events with Max Oreskovich on the pole. Starting to his outside on the front row was the 28 of Andy Klosterman.

Racing for a Reason raises over $16,000

The coronavirus pandemic didn’t stop the community from making its contribution to local childhood cancer awareness Saturday during Racing for a Reason night at Shawano Speedway.

More than $16,000 was raised Saturday, pushing the event’s 10-year total over $150,000.

The proceeds from the event go toward Child Life Services of St. Vincent in Green Bay. Brad Luepke, the speedway’s promotions and operations manager, said the goal is to make the pediatric floor the best in the Midwest.

Action-packed racing provides entertainment on Racing for a Reason night

On a night when differences are put aside to fight a common enemy, childhood cancer, Racing for a Reason again delivered a victory. With donation baskets and silent auction items galore, more than $16,000 was raised on Saturday night at Shawano Speedway. On the track, the action was incredible.

A caution on the initial start of the IMCA Feature would be the only time the yellow flag flew as the action-packed class lived up to its name.

Anvelink and Schmuhl sweep Mid-Summer Classic

Based on the support by drivers and fans, it looks like the Mid-Summer Classic may become an annual event at the Shawano Speedway. With a rare Friday night show followed up with another show on Saturday night all while battling the summer heat, fans and drivers filled the stands and pits.

Opening night set a high bar when it came to action on the track, with multiple features providing exciting three-wide racing.

Bartz captures first career IMCA Modified feature

Drivers start to separate themselves from the pack as the auto racing season nears the mid-season point.

With the shortened season, recovering from a bad night becomes very difficult. Ron Berna, Travis Van Straten, Jayden Schmidt, Tanner Westphal and Jordan Bartz began their run to the finish with wins on Saturday at Shawano Speedway.

The IMCA Modified feature saw Jesse Peebles take the early lead and he was leading when a nasty wreck featuring multiple cars brought out the caution on lap two.

Speedway honors veterans on July 4

One of the best nights of the season fittingly took place on July 4 at the Shawano Speedway as local racing heroes paid tribute to the true heroes — veterans.

Salute to the Veterans night would not have fireworks in the sky, but the oohs and aahs were definitely present as the racing action was spectacular. Over 30 veterans went home with some amazing prizes and five drivers went home with custom Salute to the Veterans hardware for their feature wins.

Speedway among gatherings tribe warns to avoid

Public health officials continue to warn against large gatherings in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin has taken that guidance a step further with a plea for the public to avoid specific activities and events.

Dr. Amy Slagle, the tribe’s COVID-19 incident commander, issued a statement Saturday imploring the public to “stay out of restaurants, bars, flea markets, races, parties and gatherings.”
