Watson’s explosion against Lions desperately needed down the road

During the past two weeks, Packers fans, players and coaches have been witnesses of Jordan Love’s best games as the starting quarterback in Green Bay.

Whether that is due to Love’s progression as a passer, Green Bay’s pass catchers stepping up in big spots or the game plan as a whole, the offense is clicking in Green Bay right now.

1. Is Christian Watson coming on as the team hoped?

At this point, there’s no question that Christian Watson is not having the season that the Packers would have hoped for. One of the reasons the Packers did not pursue a veteran receiver in free agency was the belief they had in Watson and Romeo Doubs to lead the way in the receiver room.

By all accounts, both receivers have been helpful to the young pass catchers as they try and learn Matt LaFleur’s offense.

The issue has been production, or lack thereof, on the field.

The Green Bay Packers are riding high coming into Lambeau Field for a showdown against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Packers won a game in which they were eight-point underdogs against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Thanksgiving Day.

Their offense piled up more than 370 yards, with Jordan Love staring down the Lions’ pressure and continuing to deliver big throw after big throw.

Christian Watson had his best game of the season. Tucker Kraft found the end zone for the first time.

Packers’ offense vs. Chiefs’ defense

While the Chiefs’ offense gets the majority of the attention due to Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes heading up that unit, the Chiefs’ strength this year has been on defense.

Chris Jones is one of the best interior pass rushers in football, but they will line him up all over the formation in obvious passing situations.

Jones is going to be one of the biggest tests for this Packers offensive line that is coming off a great performance against Aidan Hutchinson and the Lions’ pass rush.

Kelly brings versatility to field

The Green Bay Packers claimed cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 15.

Kelly (6-0, 191), a rookie out of Stanford, was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was released after training camp and claimed off waivers by Seattle. Kelly played in five games for the Seahawks this season.

He started 35 of 38 career games played for the Cardinals from 2019-22, earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors from the conference coaches in each of his last two seasons.

Packers take down Lions on Thanksgiving

The Green Bay Packers shocked both Detroit and those watching at home as they dismantled the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, winning 29-22 in Detroit.

Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love registered another great performance as he completed 22-of-32 for 268 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

In what may have been Love’s best game as a starting quarterback, the success started early. On the very first play of the game, Love dropped back and threw a bomb to a streaking Christian Watson, who came down with a jump ball for a 53-yard gain.

Creativity will be key for Packers against Lions

It wasn’t a running back that led the team in rushing last week; rather, it was rookie wide receiver Jayden Reed, who recorded 46 yards on three carries in Green Bay’s Week 11 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The first time these two teams met up this season, the Packers and Lions played on a Thursday night at Lambeau Field. The Lions raced out to a 27-3 lead and won 34-20 over a Packers team that looked overmatched in its first primetime game with this new core they’re establishing.

The two teams have gone opposite directions since that night. The Packers and Lions were tied for first place when that game was kicked off.

Now, the Packers are a distant third-place team, and the Lions lead the NFC North by multiple games. They look like one of the top contenders in the NFC.

The Packers’ offense has been a mixed bag throughout the course of the season.

That was to be expected with as many young players as they’ve been relying on. The number of young players has grown since the last time these two teams played. The Packers found out just before the team kicked off against the Lions that David Bakhtiari would be placed on injured reserve and would miss the rest of the season.
