A hearing is scheduled Wednesday in Marinette to determine whether an 83-year-old Lakewood man is competent to stand trial for a double murder he allegedly committed in 1976, and 10 days have been set aside for that trial just in case.

According to online records, Raymand L. Vannieuwenhoven is scheduled to stand trial starting July 19 before Marinette County Judge James A. Morrison for the shooting deaths of David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24, at the McClintock Park campground in the Marinette County Town of Silver Cliff in July 1976.

A psychologist hired by the defense was scheduled to meet with an elderly murder suspect Wednesday in Marinette to get a second opinion as to whether the Lakewood man is competent to stand trial for two 1976 murders.

Raymand L. Vanniuewenhoven, 83, is charged in the deaths of David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24, who were shot and killed July 9, 1976, at the McClintock Park campground in the Marinette County Town of Silver Cliff.

Diemel brothers service set for Navarino diamond Sept. 27

The Bonduel community will have a chance to say goodbye to the Diemel brothers, more than a year after they were murdered on a Missouri business trip.

A visitation and service for Nick, 34, and Justin, 24, has been set for Sept. 27 at the Navarino diamond, W5173 State Hwy 156, from noon until 3 p.m. Pastor Ty Stoneburner will then preside over a memorial service, according to Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home’s web site.

MARINETTE — Six weeks late, a Marinette County judge has ordered a competency examination for the octogenarian Lakewood man charged with a 1976 double murder.

At a hearing in January, Judge James Morrison approved the exam after attorneys for Raymand Vannieuwenhoven said they no longer believe he is capable of aiding his defense.

Morrison set a Feb. 10 deadline – coincidentally the defendant’s 83rd birthday – for receiving results of the exam and scheduled a hearing this week to review the situation.
