Brewers select 2 players on 1st day of draft

The Milwaukee Brewers made two picks on the first day of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft on July 11, selecting Boston College outfielder Sal Frelick with the 15th overall pick in the first round and second baseman Tyler Black of Wright State University with the 33rd overall pick in competitive balance round A.

Frelick, 21, hit .359 with 6 home runs and 27 runs batted in 48 games as a junior at Boston College in 2021, earning All-ACC First Team and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Brewers acquire Tellez from Blue Jays for Richards, Francis

Brewers general manager David Stearns addressed a need by trading with a fellow contender for the second time in less than seven weeks.

The National League Central-leading Brewers added a power-hitting first baseman, acquiring left-handed hitting Rowdy Tellez from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 6 for right-handed pitchers Trevor Richards and Bowden Francis.

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired Willy Adames with the idea he would shore up their defense and provide an energy boost in the locker room.

Little did they know how much punch he’d provide with his bat.

The Brewers had just slipped below .500 when Adames arrived along with reliever Trevor Richards in a May 21 trade that sent relievers J.P. Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen to the Tampa Bay Rays. They’ve gone 27-10 since and have won eight straight to grab a six-game lead in the NL Central.

“I love to win,” Adames said. “That’s what I’m here for.”

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired shortstop Willy Adames in a multiplayer trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on May 21.

The Brewers also got pitcher Trevor Richards from the Rays for relievers J.P Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen.

Adames is hitting .197 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 41 games. The 28-year-old Richards has a 4.50 ERA and one save in six relief appearances.

Brewers, Bucks both raising fan capacity to 50%

The Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks are both bringing more fans back into their buildings as the coronavirus crisis ebbs.

The clubs announced separately on May 11 that they will raise their fan capacity limits to 50%. The Brewers will do it at American Family Field starting May 15. The Bucks will do it for the upcoming NBA playoffs at Fiserv Forum.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the two teams had worked with city health officials for their previous limits — 25% for the Brewers and almost 18% for the Bucks.

Brewers top prospect Mitchell to open minor league career in Appleton

The Milwaukee Brewers informed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers that Garrett Mitchell, the No. 1 pick of the Brewers in the 2020 MLB Draft and the No. 1 prospect in the organization, will start his minor league career at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Brewers drafted Mitchell, an outfielder from UCLA, with the 20th pick of last year’s draft.

Brewers sign Strange-Gordon to minor league contract

Former All-Star Dee Strange-Gordon has signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and been assigned to the alternate training site in Appleton.

Strange-Gordon, who turns 33 on April 22, had gone to spring training with the Cincinnati Reds with a minor league contract and was released March 26 after hitting .281 with no homers and four RBIs in 32 at-bats over 10 games.

He had been working out at shortstop with the Reds. Strange-Gordon has primarily played second base and also has experience in the outfield.

Corbin Burnes always sensed the Milwaukee Brewers were on the verge of producing an exceptional starting rotation.

It just took some time to put it all together.

Burnes now is the hottest pitcher in a rotation that has produced a remarkable run of consistency in the first two weeks of the season. As of April 14, Brewers starters had worked at least five innings while allowing no more than one run in eight consecutive games, the longest such streak in franchise history.

Brewers set to start allowing tailgating again

The Milwaukee Brewers are going to start allowing tailgating again outside American Family Field before home games.

Tailgating wasn’t permitted for the team’s first home series as part of their pandemic-related protocols. The Brewers said tailgating will be permitted again starting with an April 12 game against the Chicago Cubs.

Brewers officials say the move has the support of the Milwaukee Health Department.

Brewers trade Arcia to Braves

The Milwaukee Brewers traded infielder Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves for right-handed pitchers Chad Sobotka and Patrick Weigel.

Arcia had been the Brewers’ starting shortstop from 2018-20, but was expected to split time between shortstop and third base this year in more of a utility role.

This move clears the way for Luis Urías to take over as the Brewers’ everyday shortstop. The Brewers had acquired the 23-year-old Urías along with pitcher Eric Lauer from San Diego in a November 2019 trade that sent outfielder Trent Grisham and pitcher Zach Davies to the Padres.
