Travis Shaw returns to Brewers with minor league deal

Travis Shaw is back in Milwaukee to give the Brewers one more option for their unsettled situation at third base.

The Brewers announced Feb. 23 that Shaw has signed a minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league camp.

“I think he fits into a need that we have,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “He has an opportunity to earn something. That’s how it was presented to Travis, and I think that’s what excited him about the opportunity.”

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Omar Narváez refuses to blame his hitting struggles last year on the unusual circumstances of the pandemic-delayed 2020 season.

“Everything got out of control,” Narváez said Feb. 21 from the Brewers’ spring training complex in Phoenix. “To me, it feels like there’s no excuses. It was a short season. Everyone talks about that. I feel like as a professional, I cannot have excuses. It didn’t go well.”

Counsell counting on Brewers hitters to bounce back

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell has a pretty simple formula for boosting a lineup that struggled throughout the abbreviated 2020 season.

His hitters just need to produce the way they typically have throughout their careers.

“We had guys that just didn’t perform last year offensively,” Counsell said Feb. 18 in his first media session since Brewers pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Phoenix. “It was puzzling. It was out of the norm.”

Wong and the Brewers finalized their $18 million, two-year contract on Feb. 5, a deal that includes a 2022 club option.

Milwaukee is making room for Wong in their infield by shifting Keston Hiura from second base to first base.

St. Louis had declined a $12.5 million 2021 option for Wong in December, making him eligible for free agency.

Brewers’ Goodrum 1st female minor league hitting coordinator

Sara Goodrum has been promoted to minor league hitting coordinator by the Milwaukee Brewers, apparently making her the first woman to have that role in any Major League Baseball organization.

Goodrum’s official new title with the Brewers is coordinator for hitting development initiatives, but she essentially will be filling the role of a minor league hitting coordinator. Brewers vice president of minor league operations Tom Flanagan said Jan. 28 that “to our knowledge, she would be the first” woman to hold that position in an MLB organization.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell is confident former MVP Christian Yelich’s 2020 hitting struggles won’t carry over to next season.
After winning consecutive NL batting titles in 2018 and 2019 during his first two years with the Brewers, Yelich hit just .205 with 12 homers and 22 RBIs in 58 games. Although his high walk totals gave him a solid .356 on-base percentage, Yelich also struck out in over 30% of his plate appearances.

Brewers get Crawford from Dodgers to complete Knebel trade

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired minor league left-handed pitcher Leo Crawford to complete the trade that sent former All-Star reliever Corey Knebel to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

When the trade was announced Dec. 2, the Dodgers received Knebel for a player to be named or cash. The player heading to Milwaukee was identified as Crawford on Dec. 11.

Maile gets deal with Brewers that pays $825,000 in majors

Free agent catcher Luke Maile and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized a one-year contract Dec. 8 that pays an $825,000 salary while in the major leagues and a $275,000 salary in the minors.

The 29-year-old can earn $75,000 in performance bonuses in the majors for games played: $25,000 each for 65, 85 and 105 games.

Brewers extend invitations to 4 minor league affiliates

The Milwaukee Brewers have extended invitations to four minor league teams to become affiliates in Major League Baseball’s new player development structure.

Receiving invitations are the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A), Biloxi Shuckers (Double-A), Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (High-A) and Carolina Mudcats (Low-A).

The Milwaukee Brewers traded reliever Corey Knebel to the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday for a player to be named or cash.

The Brewers also announced they did not offer 2021 contracts to left-hander Alex Claudio, outfielder Ben Gamel and utilityman Jace Peterson. The team reached one-year deals with shortstop Orlando Arcia ($2 million), first baseman Daniel Vogelbach ($1.4 million) and catchers Omar Narváez ($2.5 million) and Manny Piña ($1.65 million).
