The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin is doing an economic assessment in the hopes of developing a strategic plan that turns the reservation into a resource for local entrepreneurs and increases the potential benefits the tribe can tap into to improve life for its people.

The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin is one of 10 recipients of an annual award presented by Focus on Energy, the state’s energy efficiency program.

“Homeowners, businesses, and government bodies should always be on the lookout for better ways to manage their use of energy,” said Sen. Robert Cowles (R-Green Bay). “It’s better for their wallets, better for the environment, and may help lessen the burden of energy rate increases.”

FEMA awards more than $872K to Menominee

Through the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant program, FEMA has awarded $872,894 to the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin for an underground power line conversion project.

Menominee tribe launches recovery coaching program

Seven specially trained and certified recovery coaches are now available to assist those seeking recovery from substance use as well as those in active recovery.

The program is an initiative of Menominee’s Drug Addiction Intervention Team (DAIT) and the Menominee Indian Tribe Community Addiction Assistance Program (MITCAAP).

Menominee mark 50 years of restoration of tribal status

December 22, 2023, will mark the 50th anniversary of the Menominee Indian Tribe’s Restoration from the federal policy of Termination.

The U.S. Congress passed the Menominee Termination Act in 1954 but it did not take effect until April 30, 1961. The Termination Act discontinued federal services and set in motion an economic collapse, social disruption and failure of infrastructure in the Menominee community, according to the tribe.

A core group of Menominee that included Ada Deer, Sylvia Wilber and others lobbied to once again become a federally recognized tribe.

Tributes to Ada Deer flowed with tears and laughter at a memorial service at the Menominee Casino and Resort in Keshena on Oct. 4.

The shining example of Menominee tribal culture died Aug. 15 at age 88.

Joey Awonohopay, who offered the opening prayer, described Deer as a colleague, mentor and friend.

“She said, ‘Let your actions speak for the things you believe in. … When your journey comes to an end, the next generation behind you will have something beautiful that they inherit,’” he said of Deer.

Menominee tribal offices closed for 2 weeks

Citing the continued rise in tribal and local community COVID-19 cases, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin is temporarily closing its tribal government offices and facilities for a two-week period, starting Tuesday until Aug. 11.

According to data, the Menominee Reservation COVID-19 positive cases have nearly doubled within a week’s time. The reservation, which shares boundaries with Menominee County, has 17 positive cases with 8 being active cases as of Monday.

Menominee tribe establishes 10 p.m. curfew for two months

KESHENA — A curfew is in effect for the Menominee Indian Reservation for 60 days as the tribe hopes to further restrict the spread of the coronavirus.

The Menominee Tribal Legislature unanimously approved the measure at a meeting on April 6 and set it to go into effect immediately. The curfew begins at 10 p.m. and is in place through 6 a.m.

Menominee Tribal School temporarily closes

KESHENA — Menominee Tribal School will close effective Monday with a tentative student return date of April 14 in response to coronavirus concerns.

The decision came after consultation with the tribe’s incident command team.

“We are trying to be proactive and do precautionary measures,” the tribe said in a statement.

“A deep cleaning and disinfecting of the school will be conducted,” the statement continued.
